Another Heartland List book for middle grade readers, and I enjoyed it. Told from the POV of Res, a rover built to go to Mars, and Sophie, whose mom worked to build and code Res. Res has thoughts and feelings, despite being programmed as a robot. Beeps and boops. Sophie writes letters to Res, a cathartic way for her to handle her feelings and we get to watch her grow up through her letters. Book #79 in 2024
As an adult, A Rover‘s Story takes a bit more willing disbelief, but for its middle grade target audience, it‘s an almost perfect novel.
Warga deftly blends fact and fiction, education and entertainment, while finding a way to get our little rover‘s story told.
Bonus points for Warga‘s ability to disregard conventional tropes to make an original story with a lot of heart without pandering or being cloying.

A Rover's Story examines what it means to be alive. Res, our main character, is a Mars Rover. He experiences a very wide range of human emotions and experiences, but cannot communicate with humans (other than through code). Throughout his life, the author depicts the scientific journey of building a robot for space and the process of space exploration. I was shocked at how emotional a darn robot made me!

@Jenken1998 your review made me want to watch Short Circuit again. I also found the sequel that I don't think I'd ever seen before. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. This was such a cute story! I'm looking forward to the YouTube discussion hosted on Books and Jams channel.
The group read for #middlegrademarch over on YouTube. Hosted by A Curley Reader and Books and Jams. This was fantastic. It is a sweet story about a Mars rover that develops human feelings. Loved all the science info as well as riding along with a character that must identify his feelings aa he experiences them. Have to admit. I teared up a couple of times. Made me nostalgic for the movie Short Circuit 🥰
Day 1 of #MarvellousMarch was a success! I finished 5 books, 4 of which were for #buddyreads or monthly challenges.

A cute story about a rover‘s connection with his humans and his work overcoming a seemingly impossible task on Mars. Sweet, techie, and lovely 🤓
Middle Grade, that‘s where the joy lives ❤️. I‘m loving this book about Res the rover.
The mystery about the sound was never resolved despite constant harping on it because it helps to indicate the reality that science takes a really long time to figure things out...not particularly narratively satisfying, but okay. 6d
Sophie writes a series of letters that allow us to get to know her, and later read them to her mother, far as we know, Resilience never got them? Not the point, okay. 6d
I enjoyed the push and pull of attempting to relate a robot consciousness and how they would struggle to navigate a world built by humans, when they were infused with a purpose dictated by humans, that and the relationships between robots had some real potential. 6d
I will continue my search for happy robot stories. 6d
