The One and Only Ivan meets The Wild Robot in this unique and deeply moving middle grade novel about the journey of a fictional Mars rover, from the Newbery Honorwinning author of Other Words for Home. Meet Resilience, a Mars rover determined to live up to his name. Res was built to explore Mars. He was not built to have human emotions. But as he learns new things from the NASA scientists who assemble him, he begins to develop human-like feelings. Maybe theres a problem with his programming. Human emotions or not, launch day comes, and Res blasts off to Mars, accompanied by a friendly drone helicopter named Fly. But Res quickly discovers that Mars is a dangerous place filled with dust storms and giant cliffs. As he navigates Marss difficult landscape, Res is tested in ways that go beyond space exploration. As millions of people back on Earth follow his progress, will Res have the determination, courageand resilienceto succeed and survive?

Um, what? Okay, okay, I'm obviously outside the target age demographic, but that caveat aside...1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? So - the last minute fuss about dire diagnosis for the mom/scientist was a complete misdirect.
The mystery about the sound was never resolved despite constant harping on it because it helps to indicate the reality that science takes a really long time to figure things out...not particularly narratively satisfying, but okay.

Robotswithpersonality 3/? The Resilience rover who was basically given sentience for the entire novel and a close relationship with the drone robot character who similarly had a full personality, was split from Fly for - dramatic impact? Just to make us sad? 6d
Robotswithpersonality 4/? Resilience, despite clearly demonstrating the full range of human emotion (which, along with Sophie's letters, could help young readers identify their own struggles with emotion, maybe?) and the ache to connect is never able to communicate with any of the humans he worked with. 6d

Robotswithpersonality 5/? The mission to find evidence of Mars supporting life in the past matches up with the real Rovers, okay cool, while the mission to get Courage on line was another incredibly sad failure that appears to be completely fictionalized?
Sophie writes a series of letters that allow us to get to know her, and later read them to her mother, far as we know, Resilience never got them? Not the point, okay.
6d
Robotswithpersonality 6/? 'It's about the Journey not the destination' makes for a dreadful pun about the test rover's name, who never got to see Mars, again, randomly sad and disappointing.
I enjoyed the push and pull of attempting to relate a robot consciousness and how they would struggle to navigate a world built by humans, when they were infused with a purpose dictated by humans, that and the relationships between robots had some real potential.
6d
Robotswithpersonality 7/? But the author seems to have also been pulled in two other directions which both compromise what felt like the real heart of the book - somewhat paralleling the current science/discoveries relating to Mars Rovers, and trying to make this into a standard tear-jerker, because I'm fairly sure attempting to rip the reader's heart out is how you win medals in middle grade novels, but this attempt is particularly clumsy. 🤷🏼‍♂️ 6d
Robotswithpersonality 8/8 Resilience makes it back to Earth, without his friend, to be turned into a display piece, relive the glory days and missing his friend via video clips, sustained by the brief visits of those who he tried so hard so hard to please who can't even hear him. Congratulations, you successfully anthropomorphized the robot, that sounds like a nightmare.
I will continue my search for happy robot stories.

Another Heartland List book for middle grade readers, and I enjoyed it. Told from the POV of Res, a rover built to go to Mars, and Sophie, whose mom worked to build and code Res. Res has thoughts and feelings, despite being programmed as a robot. Beeps and boops. Sophie writes letters to Res, a cathartic way for her to handle her feelings and we get to watch her grow up through her letters. Book #79 in 2024

Nebklvr I loved this book. 8mo

As an adult, A Rover‘s Story takes a bit more willing disbelief, but for its middle grade target audience, it‘s an almost perfect novel.

Warga deftly blends fact and fiction, education and entertainment, while finding a way to get our little rover‘s story told.

Bonus points for Warga‘s ability to disregard conventional tropes to make an original story with a lot of heart without pandering or being cloying.

3/5 ⭐️s
A Rover's Story examines what it means to be alive. Res, our main character, is a Mars Rover. He experiences a very wide range of human emotions and experiences, but cannot communicate with humans (other than through code). Throughout his life, the author depicts the scientific journey of building a robot for space and the process of space exploration. I was shocked at how emotional a darn robot made me!

@Jenken1998 your review made me want to watch Short Circuit again. I also found the sequel that I don't think I'd ever seen before. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. This was such a cute story! I'm looking forward to the YouTube discussion hosted on Books and Jams channel.

The group read for #middlegrademarch over on YouTube. Hosted by A Curley Reader and Books and Jams. This was fantastic. It is a sweet story about a Mars rover that develops human feelings. Loved all the science info as well as riding along with a character that must identify his feelings aa he experiences them. Have to admit. I teared up a couple of times. Made me nostalgic for the movie Short Circuit 🥰

sblbooks I can't wait to read it! I thought about short circuit too, I'm going to try to find a copy to watch. 2y
Clwojick I 100% tested up when I read it! So good! 2y

A cute story about a rover‘s connection with his humans and his work overcoming a seemingly impossible task on Mars. Sweet, techie, and lovely 🤓
