The Classic Horror Stories | H. P. Lovecraft, Roger Luckhurst
6 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
H. P. Lovecraft is a major writer of horror stories, in the genre of 'weird fiction'. This new edition brings together his core 'classic' fictions with a full contextual introduction, offering a balanced assessment of an influential cult author whose tales of metaphysical horror create a profound sense of dread and unease.

You guys are making me break out the Black and Whites!!!! Each DVD collection has 50 movies! Some of these are pretty good, others are meh, and others are just downright awful. But I think it's time to go through them again!

Billypar I really love Carnival of Souls and Night of the Living Dead. And I saw House on Haunted Hill when I was a kid and that was one of my favorites. But I haven't seen any really obscure ones- any gems you'd recommend? 5y
Clwojick Okay, if you watch all 100 I will be seriously impressed! 5y
BeansPage @Clwojick watch me do it girl!!! 😁 5y

BeansPage @Billypar well you definitely can't go wrong with any of the Lon Chaney Sr movies... Phantom, Hunchback... Then there is Vincent Price. I would highly recommend his Edgar Allan Poe series and specifically Last Man on Earth. They just recently remade it into I Am Legend. Also check into Barbara Steele. Her films are mostly Italian and they are fantastic!!! 5y
Billypar I should definitely try more Lon Chaney and Vincent Price. I've seen Phantom and The Unknown, but not Hunchback. And I haven't seen the Price ones you mentioned. Or any of Barbara Stanley's except Black Sunday. Thanks for the recs!! 5y
Billypar Er Barbara *Steele's* 5y
BeansPage @Billypar you are very welcome sweetheart anytime. 🤗 5y

I love good classic horror stories like Dracula and Frankenstein. I literally could not make it through one story. It bored me to death. I tried reading two more stories and nope ...didnt hold my interest. Fell flat.

I read The Horror at Red Hook and the related endnotes as well as Roger Luckhurst's introduction for the sake of comparison to Victor LaValle's adaptation The Ballad of Black Tom for the #DSFFBookClub. Finding Lovecraft every bit as racist as his reputation, I returned the rest of it to the library unread.

"Lovecraft, though, tied the Gothic and the weird directly to the question of race. This is not superficial, but integral to his work." From the Roger Luckhurst introduction to the Oxford University Press edition of Lovecraft's stories.

What even is this garbage? I had heard about HPL's racism but he actually can't even mention POC without making disgusting comments about their bodies and appearance?
