So apparently Brazil is the no. 1 exporter of coffee & Vietnam is second, so maybe our #FoodandLit group should just work our way on down the coffee export list?? 😂

@Butterfinger @Texreader

Chrissyreadit Ohhhh!!! YES! How do I find/buy good coffee from those countries? Help! I would love this! I want to make Vietnamese coffee drink I saw pictured too. @Butterfinger @Texreader @Catsandbooks any recommendations here? @Mommamanzi do you know international coffee info? (edited) 4y
Read-y_Picker Is it too late to join? I'm already well past getting started this morning... 😂 ☕ ☕ ☕ 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Chrissyreadit - So according to my dad, who is weirdly obsessed not with just drinking coffee, but learning all about it from plant to cup, many of the Vietnamese coffee plantations were started just after the war when the US was trying to compensate for, you know, destroying the entire economy there. But the majority of what was planted & is still grown there is pretty low-quality robusta (most “good“ coffee is arabica), so you don't usually ⬇ 4y

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) see Vietnamese coffee as such in the stores - they mostly sell commodity coffee to big purchasers like Folgers & other companies that sell pre-ground coffee. (edited) 4y
Lynnsoprano @TheAromaofBooks The reason that they grow robusta is that arabica is much more susceptible to coffee rust, a fungal disease. Coffee rust wiped out the coffee plantations in then-Ceylon, so growers turned to tea. That‘s how the English became tea drinkers, because coffee was in short supply and expensive, while tea became widely available. I knew that helping hubby put together a presentation on the history of important plant diseases 👇 4y
Lynnsoprano Would come in handy some day 😂 (The man is a brilliant scientist who can scarcely open his email, much less maneuver PowerPoint) 4y
Butterfinger @Chrissyreadit In January, I just went to Amazon and searched for Brazilian coffee and Vietnamese coffee and ordered it that way. I have not tried the Vietnamese yet. I think that would be awesome - to include beverages @TheAromaofBooks how cool. @Read-y_Picker did you want to join #FoodandLit - it is never too late to travel and eat and drink with us. 4y
Chrissyreadit @Butterfinger that is what I did! I‘m excited to see how it tastes. I don‘t know why I did not think of that for Brazil 4y
Chrissyreadit @Lynnsoprano thanks for that info! I think the history of food is very interesting. One of my favorite audios is The great courses 4y
Lynnsoprano @Chrissyreadit Thanks for the recommendation! We‘re Great Courses addicts, and I‘m pretty sure I have that on our watch list. If not, it goes on for sure. We actually just finished the history of Eastern Europe yesterday, and hubby asked what course I wanted to watch next. I think I know now 😄 4y
Chrissyreadit How was History of Eastern Europe? Is there one you recommend for non US history? Especially learning about Russia and USSR? Or Africa? @Lynnsoprano 4y
Lynnsoprano @Chrissyreadit Eastern Europe was fantastic! I highly recommend, and you get a fair amount about Russia, too. We tried a Russian history course, but the lecturer was putting us to sleep, so we bailed. We‘ve done several medieval history courses that have been good. The Black Death is amazingly good. If you‘re okay with military history, decisive battles of world history is good, and really is world wide. We do a lot of science related, too. 4y
Chrissyreadit @Lynnsoprano yes- I‘m open to recommendations in science too 4y
Lynnsoprano @Chrissyreadit There‘s a relatively new Paleontology that‘s really good, and one about the science of science fiction that I enjoyed. And geological wonders of the world is great arm chair travel. 4y
Chrissyreadit @Lynnsoprano thank you 😘 I had great courses streaming for our homeschool before high school- I went ahead and renewed it. I forgot how much I loved it. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Lynnsoprano - That's super interesting about the coffee. And isn't it funny how random facts stick with us?! 😂 4y
Catsandbooks @Chrissyreadit let us know how your coffee turns out! 4y
TheBookHippie I drink coffee when awake I‘ve tried I believe almost every kind and country imaginable luckily I know several travelers and before Covid I was one too! I‘m headed to the Vietnamese grocery Friday I‘ll let you know what‘s on shelf but I did order Vietnam‘s coffee via mail as well. Brazil I had here from my friend who spent last year there! Plus I bought some it was delicious!!! @Chrissyreadit (edited) 4y
Chrissyreadit You are so lucky to live close to a Vietnamese grocery. I‘m thinking I may do coffee and tea based on the country for #foodsndlit. 4y
Chrissyreadit @Catsandbooks I will. I love coffee. 4y
