When Harry Met Minnie
When Harry Met Minnie: A True Story of Love and Friendship | Martha Teichner
8 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
A memoir of love and loss, of being in the right place at the right time, and of the mysterious ways a beloved pet can bring people together, from CBS Sunday Morning News correspondent and multi-Emmy-Award-winning Martha Teichner. There are true fairy tales. Stories that exist because impossible-to-explain coincidences change everything. Except in real life, not all of them have conventional, happily-ever-after endings. When Harry Met Minnie is that kind of fairy tale, with the vibrant, romantic New York City backdrop of its namesake, the movie When Harry Met Sally, and the bittersweet wisdom of Tuesdays with Morrie. Theres a special camaraderie among early-morning dog walkers. Gathering at dog runs in the park, or strolling through the farmer's market at Union Square before the bustling crowd appears, fellow pet owners become familiaras do the personalities of their beloved animals. In this special space and time, a chance encounter with an old acquaintance changed Martha Teichners world. As fate would have it, her friend knew someone who was dying of cancer, from exposure to toxins after 9/11, and desperate to find a home for her dog, Harry. He was a Bull Terrierthe same breed as Marthas dear Minnie. Would Martha consider giving Harry a safe, loving new home? In short order, boy dog meets girl dog, the fairy tale part of this story. But there is so much more to this book. After Martha agrees to meet Harry and his owner Carol, what begins as a transaction involving a dog becomes a deep and meaningful friendship between two women with complicated lives and a love of Bull Terriers in common. Through the heartbreak and grief of Carols illness, the bond that develops changed Marthas life, Carols life, Minnies life, Harrys life. As it changed Carols death as well. In this rich and touching narrative, Martha considers the ways our stories are shaped by the people we meet, and the profound love we can find by opening our hearts to unexpected encounters.

I needed something “fluffy” after a “ruff” day at work. (I think that‘s the end of my terrible puns.) I‘ve only read the first few pages while enjoying a glass of rosé and some calamari by myself at a local favorite restaurant, which probably also contributed, but I started to feel better. ❤️

“I understood & recalled the sweet, contemplative melancholy I felt on trips I took alone. Loneliness scared me at first, but the loneliness didn‘t last. I found myself wider awake, seeing & smelling & hearing in a heightened way. For a change, I could pay attention to words & thoughts, worries & dreams, as they came & went in my head. Time felt like poetry. I could eavesdrop. I could pretend. I could forget. I could remember.”

What‘s happier than book mail on a lazy Wednesday! 🤗 Thank you Cindy for sending this my way... even if I‘m not sure how excited I should be to read it 😆

Cinfhen Ugh, I really hated this book...sorry xx but the book cover is awesomeness 3y
BarbaraBB Fun post ❤️ 3y
Reviewsbylola Oooh I want to borrow! All I can think of when I hear “dog walkers in NYC” is that crazy lady who called police on the black bird watcher saying he was threatening her because he told her to leash her dog. 😣 3y

I feel bad saying this but... I HATED this book! The STORY itself is beautiful and so sad but the need to write and sell the story felt self indulgent and totally like a money grab. Yes, Martha Teichner did a very noble thing, taking in a dying woman‘s dog (who was old & not well) but why write a book about it. This was a lovely human interest piece that was covered on a segment of CBS Morning News ( self promotion #32) and that‘s where👇🏽

Cinfhen It should have ended. This book was just 200 pages of filler. Carol‘s story is of course tragic and worth highlighting. Carol Fertig, a notable interior designer, artist and fashion stylist was exposed to harmful substances after 9/11 as she lived right near the towers and contracted cancer, which ended her life. A tragedy. But this memoir did not add more to the narrative. I was just disappointed throughout. 3y
Cinfhen @MallenNC wrote a much lovelier review and you should probably read hers!!! 3y
emilyhaldi My mother-in-law read this recently and had been raving about it!!! She recommended it to all her friends and told me I must read it soon. I hadn‘t seen any reviews on Litsy until yours - love that you brought the realness 😂 I was skeptical about it already just based on the cover (can‘t help it!) but now I‘m even more curious to give it a read! 3y

TheAromaofBooks Whenever I am reviewing a memoir (or thinking of reading one), my question is - “Why did the author want to tell this story?“ and sometimes it definitely feels like the answer is “to cash in on people's feelings“ and/or “to show people how amazing I am“ - and those are the ones I avoid 😂 3y
TrishB Love your review ♥️ 3y
Cinfhen I feel bad with my harsh criticism but it just lacked purpose in my opinion @TheAromaofBooks ☹️ thanks @TrishB it is a lovely sad story but it didn‘t need a book deal 3y

I put down the Prophets (wasn‘t feeling it) and started this one. I‘m only on page 40 and I‘m already peeved that Martha Teichner has now mentioned that she‘s a corespondent on CBS Sunday Morning news 19 times!!! Yes, I started counting. WHO CARES?!? Ugh 🙄

Pickpick

While this book is sad, as to be expected if you read the description, I really enjoyed it. It‘s about the important place pets have in our lives, the investment we make in keeping them happy, the ways that fate brings people (and dogs) together, found family, end of life, and more. Like Martha Teichner wishes her friendship with Carol Fertig had been longer lasting, I wanted to spend more time in their story.

This is my #BookSpin for March

This is my #BookSpin pick for March and I‘m so excited to read it. I watched a segment about these dogs on CBS Sunday Morning. The author is a correspondent on the show. I know it is going to be sad in that way dog books are but I think it‘s in a good way.

TheAromaofBooks Good luck - hopefully not tooooo sad!!! 3y
MallenNC @TheAromaofBooks Having seen the story on the show I‘m prepared for it. 3y
