I was prompted to reread The Outrage after watching the Russell T Davies political thriller, Years and Years, but honesty, I couldn't have chosen a worse time to do so. The Tories are waging a war against LGBTQ+ rights every day, from the criminalisation of puberty blockers to the amendment of the Equality Act and the detention of asylum seekers. This dystopian fascist Britain doesn't seem so far away anymore. #liberation #pride 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

This is so painfully true, especially in our current political climate.

Sace This deserves more than a tap on the heart and moving on. It *is* so painfully true and it‘s so frustrating and sad that the direction of human rights seems to be changing. 😭 5mo
JenniferEgnor Beware of Project 2025. 5mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @Sace The Tories are now threatening the Equality Act. We all need to fight for our rights more than ever. When some people's rights are threatened, all of ours are 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️. 5mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @JenniferEgnor I've been reading about Project 2025. Beyond terrifying. The UK is catching up with the US now. We're passing laws that even Texas overturned here. 5mo

A heinous act of terrorism established a dictatorial right-wing reign over dystopian England, criminalising being LGBTQ and anything they deem "degenerate". When a fictional world bears an uncanny resemblance to headlines and prejudice experienced and witnessed in the here-and-now, it invokes a certain kind of fear and determination not to bow out of the on-going fight for the preservation of those hard-won rights to exist and love freely.

willaful I hear you. 9mo
Jemgirl2014 It‘s like we‘re going backwards in this country. All across the board. It‘s just terrible and disheartening. 😞 9mo
batsy I'm at the stage where I see that real life dystopia doesn't happen with a sudden event or come on abruptly, but can instead be a slow and gradual free fall where people are increasingly made to accept worse and worse things. And that's very grim to think about. 9mo

This profoundly touching LGBTQ+ love story set in a near-dystopian England is unforgettable. A poignant reminder of the fragility of our democracy, freedom & our right to love openly. It is a story to stoke the flames of the ever-present fight to exist without prejudice & persecution. Throughout it all, hope exists within the desolate. Love blooms in secret libraries. An uprising finds its voice & won't rest until the Protectorate is dismantled.

Bookwomble I'm not a great fan of YA books (not that I've read many, mind you), but I really enjoyed this one. Great representation, and beyond that a good story with engaging characters 😊 1y
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @Bookwomble Isn't it amazing?! I'm around halfway through, and I seriously doubt I'll finish the remainder without crying. The narrative is so poignant and beautifully written (I'm an instant William Hussey fan and can't wait to explore his other books). I'm glad you thoroughly enjoyed it, too. I'm pretty keen on YA. There's so many fantastic reads out there! 1y

Probably 3.5 to 4 stars in terms of the writing, which is a respectable rating anyway, but if a book makes me cry then it's an automatic 5 stars! And in terms of message, absolutely worth those 5 ⭐

My planned reading programme has been interrupted by Mrs. B making a rare book recommendation, so putting other reading on hold, I'm starting "The Outrage".
It's a YA dystopian novel set in England after a terrorist atrocity is used to justify a right-wing clampdown on citizen rights. The blurb says "This is 'The Handmaid's Tale' for LGBTQ+ YA". Disturbingly, these kinds of books are getting less like sci-fi and more like tomorrow's headlines.

TrishB That sounds scarily real. 2y
vivastory I read a story in the tagged book about AI pets that stored the voices of deceased loved ones. It's labeled as sci-fi, considering the recent news of Alexa likewise storing & playing back the voice of the departed the scifi label felt like a stretch 2y
Bookwomble @TrishB Sadly, it feels all too feasible. And, of course, the rain we still need Pride is because much of it is reality in many countries. 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory That sounds interesting, Scott. And, yes, technology based sci fi stories do run a risk of being quickly overtaken. 2y
