A little Moxie update: we have switched from the cone to a suitical recovery suit and it is a LIFESAVER that greatly decreased both of our anxiety.

julesG No, the vet at the clinic who did the operation said, the cat licked the wound/sutures. Not true. She was wearing the suit and the cone from day 1 after the surgery, since she wriggled free of the cone a lot. My vet suspects the suture material was compromised. This theory is supported by the fact that the clinic never forwarded the lab results of the swab they did on the wound when I had to take my cat in for the emergency treatment. ⬇️ 4y

julesG The wound was infected. Needed cleaning. Needed to heal on its own. Cat was on antibiotics and painkillers. And manuka honey so the wound would heal faster/better. She had to wear the suit until the wound was closed properly. This took weeks. It was three years ago. I sometimes think she has anniversary symptoms, because she's snuggling up to me a lot during February and March each year. 4y

Keep me in your thoughts ya'll. Moxie got spayed today and we're both miserable and anxious. And there's no real way to "contain" her in my apartment, so that's gonna be fun for the next loooooong two weeks. Does anyone have tips? Or possible alternatives to the cone? She'd give Houdini a run for his money and I can't have eyes on her 24/7 ?

Tamra I‘ve been through it 3 times and truthfully, they fare pretty well without much intervention. They heal so quickly. 4y

Lovesbooks87 My cat just had her cone taken off after three weeks and the first couple of days were rough on everyone with all of our anxiety being high. But she got used to it after that. We just had to put her food on a plate inside of a bowl and we had her drink of it a tall measuring cup because she had a hard time getting down far enough with her cone on. 4y

Bookish_AF We kept our cat in the bathroom for the first few days and then let her be out in the upstairs. The sad meows were terrible, but we made sure to visit her a lot during the confinement! She survived the cone, although it is covered in claw marks from her trying to get it off 😂 we also propped up her food dish on something to make it easier to reach with the cone. I remember it feeling like an eternity as well, but you will get through it! 4y

MsMelissa My dog had a circular neck pillow instead of a cone when she had surgery a couple of years back. It was way more comfortable for her since she needed to sleep with it on. I‘m not sure how small they make them. 4y

swishandflick @Megabooks thank you!! What are your thoughts on the "containment" piece? Should I try and keep her in the bathroom overnight? I'm mostly worried because the litter box won't fit in there and I won't know if she slips the collar. But it's so hard to keep her from trying to jump on things! 4y

Megabooks It is hard with kittens to keep them quiet. I generally don‘t worry as much about containment after the first 48 hours because the internal bleeding risk is much lower at that point, especially since this is a very juvenile spay (as opposed to say, a spay plus c-section.) Can you close off a different small room? Is your apartment already small? 4y

Megabooks As far as the suture line on her abdomen, some ways of doing it are more dependent on needing rest to prevent them coming out. I will say rarely is anyone able to make the full two weeks of confinement! (edited) 4y

swishandflick @Megabooks ya, my apartment is already pretty small, it's just my bedroom and everything else. She's in my bedroom with me right now, but reallyyy trying to jump on/off the bed, and to all of the little nooks and crannies she usually plays in 4y

Megabooks You can try the Feliway spray, but with that size place, I‘d probably just let her be out with you. It‘s just really hard with the young ones! 4y

swishandflick @Leftcoastzen supposed to be two weeks, but I just got her a "recovery suit" to wear instead and it's a MUCH better alternative ❤️ 4y
