Sunshine Girl
Sunshine Girl: An Unexpected Life | Julianna Margulies
8 posts | 9 read | 2 to read
Known for her outstanding performances on The Good Wife and ER, Julianna Margulies now unleashes her sharp talent with a powerful debut memoir chronicling her life and her work, examining from within her journey from chaos to calm. "When an actor is on a long running television show, especially when the writing is superb as was the case with The Good Wife, the character becomes a second skin; they grow as you grow, they change as you change. Being an actress gives me the luxury of discovering myself. All the feelings that came up from playing Alicia allowed me to look back at my life and tap into my own vulnerability. My personal fear of the unknown reared its ugly head as I studied this character, most likely stemming from the ever-present unpredictability of my childhood." --from the introduction An apple-cheeked bubbly child, Julianna Margulies was bestowed the nickname "Sunshine Girl" by her mother at an early age. Raised between two divorced parents, often on different continents, Julianna quickly learned how to be of value to her eccentric mother and her absent father. Raised in fairly unconventional ways in various homes in Paris, England, New York, and New Hampshire, Julianna's role among the turmoil and uncertainty surrounding her was to comfort those around her, find organization among the disorder, and eventually make her way in the world as a young adult and eventually an award-winning actress. Along the way, there were failed romances, difficult choices, and overwhelming rejections. But there were also the moments that fate, faith, and talent assembled in a perfect storm that led to the roles of a lifetime, both professionally and personally. Unflinchingly honest and perceptive, Sunshine Girl is a riveting self-portrait of a woman whose resilience in the face of turmoil will leave readers intrigued and inspired.

Julianna is great at telling a story and her story is surprisingly interesting. Mostly about her childhood/youth, doesn't really go into her acting career or her co-stars, but if you go in not expecting gossip it really is a great book.

This book takes us through Julianna Margulies's life; from childhood through to Good Wife. She touches on Anthroposophy and eurythmy. The former is the practice of getting close to god through human action, typically by the use of eurythmy which is a form of expressive dance. she also discusses the time she ignored a dental situation until it became dire. It was a fascinating read.

Tbh, there was nothing particularly unexpected about her life. Her parents divorced; her mother moved a lot & had many boyfriends; her father was distant. When she moved to NYC, she worked as a waitress (shocking!) until she relocated to LA for ER. She doesn‘t tell any specific stories about her time on ER or The Good Wife. Her analysis of her very normal personal relationships was dull. If you‘re a celebrity, just spill the tea! B/t a so-so & pan

Megabooks The only interesting celebrity story was about Sylvester Stallone trying to get her in bed before an audition. And even that‘s not particularly shocking! 3y
Kimberlone I heard her on a podcast explaining that she wrote the book she wanted and it wasn‘t intended to be a gossipy inside Hollywood tell all, but I can see why that would make a pretty boring read. I‘m not much into celebrity memoirs myself. 3y
Megabooks @Kimberlone and it‘s fine that she wrote the memoir she wanted, but there are many, many non-celebrities with far more interesting personal lives. I mean she spent a ridiculously long amount of time talking about a broken tooth then another half a chapter talking about the gum surgery she needed because of it later in life. Sigh. Maybe I should make this a pan. 🤔 3y

Kimberlone @Megabooks haha yes that sounds very uninteresting 3y
Cinfhen #HardPass not because she doesn‘t spill the tea, but why write a memoir when there‘s no story to be told??? Seems like she was just trying to profit from her celebrity status ☹️ (edited) 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen she may be trying to profit, but it also seems like she thinks her life is genuinely interesting, which I didn‘t find it to be. There‘s no way this would‘ve been published if she were famous. Far too milquetoast! 3y

I have never seen an episode of The Good Wife, I hear it's great. But what I have watched a ton of is ER! 👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️ I was really hoping she would tell us why she turned down that $27million paycheck for two more seasons, she does. What surprised me is this book is not a tell all, its really a look at how her crazy childhood and adolescence shaped the woman she has become. It's super interesting and I enjoyed it.⭐⭐⭐⭐

TheLudicReader The Good Wife is fun fun fun! 3y
Tera66 @TheLudicReader That seems to be the role she was most proud of. Ill have to watch it one day. 3y

Thank you @MoonWitch94

1. Dobby and any other Harry Potter characters that died in the end.

2. My favorite book is Tuck Everlasting and I really love the melancholy ending. It's the first time I got that sweet sad feeling.

3. Tagged - Finished it this morning.

MoonWitch94 Oh the HP slaughter has been a popular answer! Just devastating. And Tuck Everlasting is an ending I didn‘t fully appreciate until I was older. A great choice. Thanks for playing ☺️🌸📖🎉 3y

I enjoy a good celebrity memoir. The best bits of this one kick in after the halfway mark. Before it‘s her interesting but uneventful childhood (although she lives in a lot of different places, the narrative about this time is lack luster). #ARC #Netgalley
