The Vanishing Point
The Vanishing Point: A Novel | Elizabeth Brundage
10 posts | 3 read | 21 to read
At Rye Adlers funeral, they didnt bury his body or the rivalry of his closest enemy. A gripping literary thriller by the author of the wrenching and exhilarating All Things Cease to Appear (Wall Street Journal). Julian Ladd and Rye Adler cross paths as photography students in the exclusive Brodsky Workshop. When Rye needs a roommate, Julian moves in, and a quiet, compulsive envy takes root, assuring, at least in his own mind, that he will never achieve Ryes certain success. Both men are fascinated with their beautiful and talented classmate, Magda, whose captivating images of her Polish neighborhood set her apart, and each will come to know her intimately a woman neither can possess and only one can love. Twenty years later, long after their paths diverge, Rye is at the top of his field, famous for his photographs of celebrities and far removed from the downtrodden and disenfranchised subjects whod secured his reputation as the eye of his generation. When Magda reenters his life, asking for help only he can give, Rye finds himself in a broken landscape of street people and addicts, forcing him to reckon with the artist he once was, until his search for a missing boy becomes his own desperate fight to survive. Months later, when Julian discovers Ryes obituary, the paper makes it sound like a suicide. Despite himself, Julian attends the funeral, where there is no casket and no body. This sudden reentry into a world he thought he left behind forces Julian to question not only Ryes death, but the very foundations of his life. In this eerie and evocative novel, Elizabeth Brundage establishes herself as one of the premiere authors of literary fiction at work today.

Brundage is a treasure and one of my favorite lesser known authors. She writes some of the best dark literary thrillers out now, and this is no exception.

Charismatic Rye and circumspect Julian meet in a photography workshop and both covet the same woman, Magda. Years later, Rye is world renown, and Julian works in advertising. As Brundage slowly reveals the connections among these classmates, dark secrets emerge. Best book this month so far!

Cinfhen Oh wow!!! High praise!! 1y

Megabooks @Suet624 thanks! These were the plants in front of my hotel in downtown Nashville. They were just stunning! 1y
squirrelbrain I really ought to try this author - stacked. 1y
BarbaraBB Great review and photo. Definitely stacking 1y
Cinfhen In Sorrento!! It‘s beautiful but I‘m SO sick😷 🤧🤧🤧🤧🤧I can‘t lift my head 🤕🤕🤕Hoping some SUNSHINE today will clear my head 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞 1y
Cinfhen Going to Capri tonight 🫶🏼 1y
batsy Sounds good! Adding her to my list of authors to check out. And the colours in the photo 😍 1y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain @batsy I think you‘d both like her! 1y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I think you‘d find some of the photography parts interesting too. They (the workshop) negatively compare Julian‘s photos to Atget‘s Paris photos as both are soulless. I‘ve never felt that about Atget nor honestly any photos of empty spaces, but maybe I‘m just weird. 😂😂 Rye was said to be better because he photographed living subject, which I guess are automatically soulful. An interesting, if reductive approach. 1y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB very curious about what you think of the art analysis too!! 1y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I hope you‘re feeling better than that Capri was gorgeous!!! Mom‘s deep in the throes of my cold now. Going to get her some mucinex soon. 1y
Cinfhen Your poor mom!! hope she‘s feeling better xx Capri is GORGEOUS but SO over the top 😅I‘m at about 50% 🙃getting there slowly 1y
BarbaraBB Sounds super interesting Meg! Sorry to hear your mother catched your cold! So you‘re nursing again I guess? 1y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I‘ve never been to Capri but heard that indeed. Ischia is supposed to be more authentic Italian. 1y

Ethereal writing , a feeling of being untethered, of floating upwards. A story about photography , relationships , there are so many stills in the pictures in my mind as I read… shadowy , unsettling.
A good book , except & maybe it‘s my frame of mind at the moment… but I had to slow down & take this in small doses, the stark & harrowing descriptions of heroin addiction were very real & the author doesn‘t shy away from them. Trigger warning …

Freespirit Lovely review💕 3y
Cathythoughts @Freespirit Thanks ❤️👍🏻 I dont think I‘d recommend it though , I found it very hard going. I‘m glad it‘s over … Beautiful writing (edited) 3y
Tamra Sounds like a pass for me, even with good writing. Sometimes reality is too much. 😏 3y

When she let out the dogs she stood on the cold porch, listening to the night, the language of the country, the animals, the insects, the distant train, then the edge of quiet that came at last, like the final sentence of a novel.
She will soon be fifty. A certain corruption has frayed the seams of her heart. The news frightens her , the government, the widespread complacency. She doesn‘t know how to think about the future. If the planet can heal

andrew61 Never heard of this author Cathy but will try and find a book by her as sounds great. 3y
BarbaraBB ❤️ 3y

That summer he learned there was something intoxicating about transience, when you are in between, moving from one place to another, unscheduled, open to the day before you, open to the land, unafraid of the passing of time. The beauty of the land washes over you. It forgives you. It says: Start here. Begin.

TrishB Lovely ♥️ oh to be moving between lands! 3y
Cathythoughts @TrishB Indeed ❤️ 3y
