9 most loved August reads.

It‘s been a difficult/busy month.
BIRTHDAY month, Packing up for an office move, still getting work done, replacing a water heater and unexpectedly a ton of pipe and I feel like I‘m still slumping.

32 books. The Joy of Sweat sticks out along with The Ballad of Never After … maybe I just needed something different because there were a ton of really good books last month.

vivastory I recently had to move my office, too. Good luck! 2y
Twainy @vivastory ahh then you probably know my pain that as of yesterday we‘re mostly moved in … now I have a lot of work to catch up on that wasn‘t getting done while we were moving 😁 2y

1. I had a bunch of 4.5 - 5 star reads this month & none seem to have stood out among the rest. What does it mean when that happens. I guess I‘ll pick The Joy of Sweat.

2. It‘s just a super interesting book. Who knew there was that much to learn about sweat …

Fun! Fascinating! Full of facts you‘ll want to share with your friends! We would die if we didn‘t sweat. Other creatures cool off by vomiting or peeing on themselves, among other methods. There‘s a worldwide protocol for professional armpit sniffers and a market for artificial sweat. Why do some people have colourful sweat? There are dating schemes that match couples based on body odour. That‘s just a few examples of why I loved this audiobook.

Lindy @kspenmoll I ran out of room to mention that the audiobook is read by Sophie Amoss, who conveys the author‘s passion for her subject without going over the top. 2y

Many people who have grown up in cold or temperate climates & relocate to the tropics as adults find themselves dripping with sweat, while longtime locals barely cut a sheen. But you can be sure that people who seem impressively cool & collected, and, more specifically, dry, in hot weather are still most definitely sweating. It‘s just that they are doing so very efficiently. ⬇️

Lindy (Continued) Their sweat rate is keyed to release exactly enough perspiration for optimal cooling evaporation. 2y
batsy I've lived in a hot climate all my life and have never stopped sweating, sadly #InefficientSweatRate 😆 2y

Lindy @batsy Ha! I would say too bad for you, except sweating is a good thing, even if your body isn‘t perspiring at peak efficiency: we would die if we didn‘t have a way to cool our body. Some animals poop or vomit on themselves to cool off… sweat glands are preferable, right? 😉 2y
batsy @Lindy When you put it that way ... I'm all for sweat glands 😂 2y
CarolynM What about shivering? That photo (while it‘s always nice to see your lovely face) is enough to set me off🤣🥶❄️ 2y
Lindy @CarolynM Ha! Well, I didn‘t happen to have a photo of me looking hot and sweaty (although I have felt that way much of this unusually warm summer). But since I grew up and live in a normally cold climate, I‘m an example of a person who sweats a lot in the tropics. When I spent 4 months in Sri Lanka, I just had to accept that I would be damp from sweat all the time. 2y

Nice little pop science, Mary Roach-esque book about sweat. Interesting tidbits about sweating in arid and humid locales, athletes, and history of combating sweat. Humorous anecdotes and not at all heavy on the science, which I rate as a pro and a con. Heard the author on Science Friday, and it is an enjoyable book.

MyNamesParadise I sweat so easily. I think medications I take contribute to it though. Is that mentioned at all in the book? 2y

Mary Roach fans add this book to your TBR pile!! I‘m proud to introduce a new writer of weird science books! Yes, this book is about sweat. And it is INTERESTING! I learned all kinds of odd facts and enjoyed every minute. So if you‘re looking for a new perspective on human perspiration…this book is for you!! 🥵
