From the award-winning author of the Dreamland series comes a new dark romantic fantasy about a young woman finding hope in her powers of destruction. The Thief Kingdom is a place hidden within the world of Aadilor. Many whisper of its existence, but few have found this place, where magic and pleasure abound. There, the mysterious Thief King reigns supreme with the help of the Mousai, a trio of revered and feared sorceresses. Larkyra Bassette may be the youngest of the Mousai, but when she sings her voice has the power to slay monsters. When it's discovered the Duke of Lachlan is siphoning a poisonous drug from the Thief Kingdom and using it to abuse his tenants, Larkyra is offered her first solo mission to stop the duke. Eager to prove herself, Larkyra accepts by posing as the duke's potential bride. But her plans grow complicated when she finds herself drawn to Lord Darius Mekenna, Lachlan's rightful heir. Soon she suspects Darius has his own motivations for ridding Lachlan of the corrupt duke. Larkyra and Darius must learn to trust each other if there is to be any hope of saving the people of Lachlan--and themselves. Welcome to the world of Aadilor, where lords and ladies can be murderers and thieves, and the most alluring notes are often the deadliest. Dare to listen?

This was somehow really cozy to read: characters were likable and felt realistic. Both main characters had something unpleasant that has happened in their past. And they both had troubles in their lives, this all made them feel alive and relatable.

This had quite nice atmosphere, it felt a bit mysterious and magical.

Everything suddenly resolved quite quick and easy. But that also made this comfortable to read.

I LOVED this story. The sisters were so amazing as characters. This was a very entertaining fantasy story and I‘m excited to read the next in the series. This one really pulled me out of my reading slump.

I thoroughly enjoyed this fantasy inspired by the muses and their powers. It was different than anything I've read before. The relationship between the sisters was very real and amusing. It had snark, happiness, grief, anger, loyalty, hope, love; the full scope of human emotions. I enjoyed watching the main character truly finding her voice and accepting her powers. I look forward to reading the next two books in the series.

I'm struggling to determine the rating of this book, between 3 or 4 ⭐
I love the characters, the Bassette sisters are the embodiment of handful girls with all-too-powerful magic, endless banters and always looking out for trouble. I love the magical world settings. The words are melodious and sweet but the phase is too slow. I think the action started after 50% of the book so I debated quite a few times to continue reading or not.

"The little girls played in a puddle of blood." Well, that's certainly one way to begin a book. Attention grabbing, for sure. Good way to start the day. ?

Bailedbailed

I ended up bailing on this book about 20% in. The characters seemed uninteresting and I could not handle the SLOW buildup to the actual plot.

My first reads picks for June. Have We Met is a debut romance about a woman who's lost her best friend to cancer & has moved back home. A mysterious dating app appears on her phone telling her she's already met her soul mate. The tagged book is a first in a new fantasy series about a woman who can kill with her song. She's hired to kill a corrupt duke and becomes drawn to his rightful heir, who has his own reasons for wanting the duke dead.
