Double and the Gambler
Double and the Gambler | Fyodor Dostoevsky
The first real expression of Dostoevsky's genius, The Double is a surprisingly modern hallucinatory nightmare in which a minor official named Goliadkin becomes aware of a mysterious doppelgnger-a man who has his name and his face and who gradually and relentlessly begins to displace him with his friends and colleagues. In the dilemma of this increasingly paranoid hero, Dostoevsky makes vividly concrete the inner disintegration of consciousness that would become a major theme of his work. The Gambler was written twenty years later, under the pressure of crushing debt. It is a stunning psychological portrait of a young man's exhilarating and destructive addiction, a compulsion that Dostoevsky-who once gambled away his young wife's wedding ring-knew intimately from his own experience. In the disastrous love affairs and gambling adventures of his character, Alexei Ivanovich, Dostoevsky explores the irresistible temptation to look into the abyss of ultimate risk that he believed was an essential part of the Russian national character. The two strikingly original short novels brought together here-in new translations by award-winning translators-were both literary gambles of a sort for Dostoevsky.

Mehso-so

I had expectations going in as I love a recent film adaptation. It was fine, just not very eventful.

I remembered seeing the Jesse Eisenberg movie years ago and really enjoying that, so I thought this would be great…instead, it was just okay. The protagonist is so meek and awkward that it‘s hard to like him. I just found myself irritated much of the time. The ending was probably a shocker when this was published, but it doesn‘t have as much of an impact today. I recommend the movie as they did a great job of modernizing the material. 2.5/5

vivastory I don't recall if I saw the Eisenberg movie. I do remember a similar movie with a similar plot released around the same time starring Jake Gyllenhaal & directed by Villeneuve called Enemy. Based off of the Saramago book which I'm sure was influenced by Dostoevsky 3y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 3y
JoeMo Thanks for the info @vivastory I‘ll definitely have to check out Enemy! 3y

Read this when I was 14, which kicked off a months-long binge devouring every single word Dostoevsky wrote. Not sure whether this was the book that turned me into a "serious reader", but I remember that I hadn't read anything quite like it before in my life. It still resonates with me today. Nabokov called it a "perfect piece of art", which given his complicated feelings toward D, was high praise indeed. He even ripped off the idea for 'Despair'!

readordierachel Have you seem the film adaptation of this with Jesse Eisenberg? It's interesting. 6y
vivastory @ReadOrDieRachel Yeah, it's a Denis Villeneuve movie. I love his work & I enjoyed it, but I think it's my least favorite he's directed since Prisoner. I can't wait for his two part version of Dune! 6y
readordierachel @vivastory I didn't realize it was his! I still think about some of the scenes from Prisoners occasionally. *shudder* Two-part Dune sounds like it could be amazing! 🤞🏽 6y

Pickpick

The double was ok. If it was longer than a novella I dont know if it would have kept my attention but as it was, I enjoyed it. People say it is reminiscent of Gogol but I've never read any Gogol so it reminded me a little of Kafka (even though he came after) who I've read a little of. On to White Nights.
