Blew through this wild ride with Karl Rossman in America - a lighter novel by Kafka. But I have to say - Kafka simply decided to not finish writing this book AND left it at a major cliffhanger. Why???? Ahhh the anxiety is going to kill me. But fantastic writing in the first 7 chapters. If you‘re ok with being ghosted by Kafka, this is a fun one.

I‘ve been struggling to find good fiction that satisfies my current mood lately, picked up Kafka‘s America yesterday. Here‘s hoping it pulls me out of this fiction slump! (PS I really enjoy Kafka‘s writing)

This is the best postcard I‘ve ever received!! I‘ve felt like I‘ve been living in a Kafka story the past week. I‘ve tried multiple times to get tested for COVID-19 and been denied as low risk. As a bedside nurse with all the symptoms.... I‘m on the mend now, but America‘s lack of testing is Kafkaesque to say the least. #litsylove 🤣

StaceGhost Oh wow what a nightmare! I‘m so glad my tiny card could brighten your day! Feel better soon and thank you for fighting against this awful virus 🦠 5y
Bookwormjillk I‘m glad you‘re feeling better Catie! 5y
iread2much Agreed! My brother and his whole family were exposed a confirmed positive COVID19, and even with my niece showing symptoms and being told she needed testing, couldnt get a test 😡 5y

I was struck by this cover to Kafka's "America" and had to buy it! Now I have another interesting artist to explore - the painting is by Paul Kelpe, "Abstract No. 2", 1935.

saresmoore The art really is striking. 6y
Leftcoastzen That is an amazing cover. 6y

Bookwomble @saresmoore @Leftcoastzen @GhostStories @DivineDiana I hadn't come across Kelpe's work before, but having searched his paintings on the interwebs, find he created some powerful stuff. His self portrait is incredible: http://www.chicagomodern.org/images/art/Paul-Kelpe-resized.jpg 6y
DivineDiana It certainly is!!! 6y

Ive gone for the very obvious from the days when I devoured the genius of kafka. Like a character from one of his books ive forgotten the plot but im sat watching a bbc panorama on Trump wondering what he would have written today.
Anyway i am inspired to reread this soon.

TrishB Good pick 👍🏻 7y

This is the first and (unfortunately) unfinished Kafka's novel about Karl Rossman, who is banshed from his family home and tries to find his way in the Land of the opportunity. But this is Kafka, so everything goes wrong for Karl and his adventures endured many misfortunes. Great read for Kafka's lovers, in which you can easily see how the ideas and atmosphere, he is known for, were born and shaped into his later works.
