The Cellist: A Novel | Daniel Silva
6 posts | 5 read | 2 to read
From Daniel Silva, the internationally acclaimed #1 New York Times bestselling author, comes a timely and explosive new thriller featuring art restorer and legendary spy Gabriel Allon. Viktor Orlov had a longstanding appointment with death. Once Russias richest man, he now resides in splendid exile in London, where he has waged a tireless crusade against the authoritarian kleptocrats who have seized control of the Kremlin. His mansion in Chelseas exclusive Cheyne Walk is one of the most heavily protected private dwellings in London. Yet somehow, on a rainy summer evening, in the midst of a global pandemic, Russias vengeful president finally manages to cross Orlovs name off his kill list. Before him was the receiver from his landline telephone, a half-drunk glass of red wine, and a stack of documents. The documents are contaminated with a deadly nerve agent. The Metropolitan Police determine that they were delivered to Orlovs home by one of his employees, a prominent investigative reporter from the anti-Kremlin Moskovskaya Gazeta. And when the reporter slips from London hours after the killing, MI6 concludes she is a Moscow Center assassin who has cunningly penetrated Orlovs formidable defenses. But Gabriel Allon, who owes his very life to Viktor Orlov, believes his friends in British intelligence are dangerously mistaken. His desperate search for the truth will take him from London to Amsterdam and eventually to Geneva, where a private intelligence service controlled by a childhood friend of the Russian president is using KGB-style active measures to undermine the West from within. Known as the Haydn Group, the unit is plotting an unspeakable act of violence that will plunge an already divided America into chaos and leave Russia unchallenged. Only Gabriel Allon, with the help of a brilliant young woman employed by the worlds dirtiest bank, can stop it. Elegant and sophisticated, provocative and daring, The Cellist explores one of the preeminent threats facing the West todaythe corrupting influence of dirty money wielded by a revanchist and reckless Russia. It is at once a novel of hope and a stark warning about the fragile state of democracy. And it proves once again why Daniel Silva is regarded as his generations finest writer of suspense and international intrigue.

I really enjoyed this book … & it‘s been a while since I said that about this series. I‘ve read every book & feel as though I know them all. Here, Silva returns to focus on Russia, hitting at a boyhood friend of Putin, an oligarch living in Zurich. The plot is lively, fast paced, & detailed. Britain, France, Switzerland, & Israel bide their time until the change-over of the uS presidency … topical, timely, & well-plotted. 4/5

The only connection to the book is the picture!

My college roommate gave me this bookmark back in the day. A few years ago she made a career change from writer/editor to pre-K teacher!

In other words, I‘m doing a two-fer again. 😎

Mehso-so

I‘m very sorry to say this was just a bit meh. Felt like a rehashed story line and was just a bit boring. Sad, because I have loved this series.
It‘s maybe time to pass the baton to another team member or just retire the series 🤷‍♀️

Susanita He did a zoom thing a few weeks ago and was rather coy when asked about ending the series. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
TrishB @Susanita that‘s interesting, it‘s the first one I‘ve felt was a bit meh, so we‘ll see I guess. 3y
Cinfhen I felt the same way!!! The last few books have started to lose their spark ⚡️ he has sort of written Gabriel into a corner 3y
TrishB @Cinfhen definitely! Be interesting to see what happens next, a bit sad but authors always seem to carry on a bit long with series. 3y

Daniel Silva‘s latest installment of the Gabriel Allon series was completely satisfying. While there wasn‘t much physical action, we had a lot of visits from past characters and are introduced to a new heroine. This book set in 2020/ 2021 had the US elections playing a pivotal role as did Covid. I do fear, Silva is running out of steam for Gabriel as he‘s aging and about to step away from the agency. Curious to see what‘s next.
