20-year old Lilja is in love. As a young university student, she is quickly smitten with the intelligent, beautiful young man from school who quotes Derrida and reads Latin and cooks balanced vegetarian meals. Before she even realizes, she's moved in with him, living in his cramped apartment, surrounded by sour towels and flat Diet Cokes. As the newfound intimacy of sharing a shower and a bed fuels her desire to please her partner, his acts of nearly imperceptible abuse continue to mount undetected. Lilja desperately tries to be the perfect lover, attempting to meet his every need. But in order to do so, she gradually lets go of her boundaries and starts to lose her sense of self. With astounding clarity and restraint, Hjrleifsdttir sheds light on the commonplace undercurrents of violence that so often go undetected in romantic relationships. She deftly illustrates the failings of psychiatric systems in recognizing symptoms of cruelty, and in powerful, poetic prose depicts the unspooling of a tender-hearted woman desperate to love well.

I've just finished Magma, a novella by Icelandic author Thora Hjörleifsdóttir, about the downward spiral of a young woman, just starting university, in thrall to her arsehole, manipulative, older boyfriend. It was short and hard-hitting, and very depressing, as books about abusive relationships tend to be.

(To cheer myself up, I chose to post a photo of Reykjavik rather than the book's cover)

Pickpick

Quick #translated read about a young women in a toxic, abusive relationship and her declining mental health. It‘s written in short first person vignettes that come together to show the narrators decline into self harm and extreme depression. Overall this was a disturbing but strangely gripping #novella. Read on #scribd

MelAnn I‘m thinking about subscribing to Scribd and dropping Kindle Unlimited - already dropped audible…. What do you think about Scribd? 3y
CindyE09 @MelAnn I much prefer the book selection on scribd than KU for literary fiction, translated fiction and new releases. The huge downfall is that you can‘t read on a kindle, and that‘s how I do most of my reading. I can read scribd books on my phone or iPad though. It‘s never happened to me, but I believe scribd caps how many books you can read month, so if you tear through a series or something you might find yourself cut off. 3y
MelAnn That's good to know! Thank you! 3y
