Hurricane Lizards and Plastic Squid
Hurricane Lizards and Plastic Squid: The Fraught and Fascinating Biology of Climate Change | Thor Hanson
5 posts | 4 read | 6 to read
A beloved natural historian explores how climate change is driving evolution In Hurricane Lizards and Plastic Squid, biologist Thor Hanson tells the remarkable story of how plants and animals are responding to climate change: adjusting, evolving, and sometimes dying out. Anole lizards have grown larger toe pads, to grip more tightly in frequent hurricanes. Warm waters cause the development of Humboldt squid to alter so dramatically that fishermen mistake them for different species. Brown pelicans move north, and long-spined sea urchins south, to find cooler homes. And when coral reefs sicken, they leave no territory worth fighting for, so aggressive butterfly fish transform instantly into pacifists. A story of hope, resilience, and risk, Hurricane Lizards and Plastic Squid is natural history for readers of Bernd Heinrich, Robin Wall Kimmerer, and David Haskell. It is also a reminder of how unpredictable climate change is as it interacts with the messy lattice of life.

"It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change." - Charles Darwin

38/150 For a book about climate change, this is kind of positive. Plants and animals find a way, whether it's to move to a better climate, learn to adapt to the climate, or rapidly evolve ways to survive, nature is always seeking ways to continue. Continued in the comments ⬇️⬇️⬇️

RamsFan1963 That's why nature will probably outlive mankind. Nature adapts, mankind would rather force nature to adapt to us. It's not a winnable strategy. 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 2y

This is a light pick. The information and various examples were interesting, but it left me feeling a little underwhelmed.

Though I‘ve read quite a number of climate change books, this book‘s tactic of analyzing animals‘ and plants‘ adaptive response to climate change was a different take. Interesting anecdotes describing different species‘ abilities to adjust quickly was interesting. The quotes starting each chapter were well placed and perfect!
