pickCatching up on reviews after a crazy few weeks. This is a wonderful children‘s story that is equally for adults about a despot who takes over an island and bans the letter O, and the way the village responds to the irrational situation. Timely and applicable.
pickWhen the pirates of the ship Aeiu find no jewels on the island of Ooroo, they decide to take over and ban all words that contain O.
The poor people lose their roofs and doors and dogs and oboes, they are even banned from speaking Os so “woe is we”.
They refuse to give up hope, love, valor, and one more very important O word though, and in the end the day is saved with the help of a magical castle.

I was delighted with the cadence and linguistic play in this children‘s tale. It was very reminiscent with Dr. Seuss‘s writing style. Yet it did address the issues with banning letters in a way that might help children understand the perils present when making things illegal just because they disturb an individual.

Evil pirate comes to the island and decrees that the letter “O” is banned. The mayhem that ensures is pretty hilarious as he tries to omit everything that has the letter O. Otto Ott, a character in the book, is distressed as he becomes a stutter
