Mehso-so

Thurber‘s wit may be best served in small doses, hence the short stories and musings in this collection. Some are fantastic - “Interview with a Lemming” for instance - but the vast majority felt dated and not relevant. There is great prose here, some of it (especially the stories of France) is just not my jam.

Pickpick

More than 20 years before Charlottes Web, E.B. White published this odd gem as satire after the emergence of sexology in the 1900s from scientists like Freud and others I‘ve never previously heard of. Enjoyed the chapters about explaining sex to parents and male frigidity, shown by illustrations here by James Thurber. Like not love it... had this on my shelf for ages and finally read it as my February #bookspin #doublespin thanks @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Oh my gosh, what a random book! Glad you (mostly) enjoyed it your pick! 5y
Cosmos_Moon_River @TheAromaofBooks I found it at a used book sale and just had to have it. I couldn‘t believe this book existed! I‘m glad I finally read it. 5y
TheAromaofBooks I love haphazard finds like that! 5y

Almost done with this oldie. Hilarious at times. Enjoyed the chapter about teaching parents about sex. This illustration caption got me! “It is customary to illustrate sexology chapters with a cross section of the human body. The authors here chose to substitute in its place a chart of the North Atlantic, showing airplane routes. The authors realize that this will be of no help to the sex novice, but neither is a cross section of the human body.”

Book haul from the Book Sorting: Old books
There‘s something to be said for living in an area where the people are book lovers and hold on to books for DECADES. #ModerLibrary #Thurber and an illustrated Shaker Cook Book from 1953!

ValerieAndBooks Are you in a college town? 5y
Aimeesue @ValerieAndBooks Right outside of DC. Donations mostly come from retired Federal Employees, college profs, and former military. We get a lot of books from older people downsizing, too. 5y
Aimeesue Oh, and former Congresspersons. That's happened once or twice that I know of. 5y
ValerieAndBooks I was thinking college profs because they tend to stay put once they get tenure 🙂. The rest makes sense too. If we hadn‘t had to move as often as we did, I‘m sure my library would be twice as big 😂 5y
