"Aware of the racial tumult in the years after the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act, Mei tries to remain blissfully focused on her job, her close friendship with the camp foreman's daughter, and telling stories about Paul Bunyan--reinvented as Po Pan Yin (Auntie Po), an elderly Chinese matriarch"--

I first read this about a year & a half ago…. Then flew thru it again this morning before talking with 7&8th graders about it! Great story, wonderful art, and very well balanced emotionally. #bbrc

I bought this for my daughter but ended up reading it myself. Coincidentally, the story is set right around the time my own family came to California. It‘s something that is so important, I think, to not only understand but to feel and to see that we, too, are a part of the American story, for all the good and bad that entails. This story was beautiful, both visually and emotionally, and it‘s wonderful to be able to read stories like this.

Mei is a 13-yr-old Chinese American girl who helps out her father, a cook, at a logging camp. Inspired by the tales of Paul Bunyan, she reimagines them as the Legends of Auntie Po, sort of a guardian figure of the loggers, and tells these made up stories to entertain the workers and to help cope with the difficulties she faces. This is a sweet story about friendship, tradition, and the power of ⬇️

erzascarletbookgasm …. storytelling. It‘s also very much a story of harsh life at logging camps, the dangers of logging, and incidents of violence, racism and discrimination against the Chinese immigrants, an aspect of American history not much told. 2y

Hey all, just got this last night. It‘s been in the mail a while. I‘ll get it read and sent out this weekend.

LibrarianRyan @WanderingBookaneer @LauraBeth @ozma.of.oz speaking of LMPBC Round 13, I never got a single book. I tried contacting Laura both on here and through email. If they ever do show up I‘ll get them sent right away. 2y
IndoorDame Wow, I‘m sorry! That was way later than the projected delivery date. Oh well, I hope you enjoy this one! I think it‘ll be worth the wait. 2y
LibrarianRyan @IndoorDame I have been realling interested in reading it. I know you mailed this a while ago which is why I wanted to make sure you knew I got it. I have had a lot of late mail lately. The snow storm last week didn't help. 2y

IndoorDame @LibrarianRyan oh, right the storm! That‘s probably why I haven‘t gotten the book I‘m waiting on for group P. Anyway, thanks for letting me know! I‘m glad it at least arrived safely if not on time… 2y
BookmarkTavern I kind of figured that was the problem when I saw you comment on Laura‘s post a while ago. Thanks for messaging her. 👍🏻 2y
WanderingBookaneer It‘s going to me next. Right? It‘s my book so you can take your time. 2y
WanderingBookaneer I got Animus. I have been sending the books to @LauraBeth . They‘ve all appeared as delivered (USPS) 2y
LibrarianRyan @WanderingBookaneer yep. I‘m looking forward to reading it. I need something to get me out of my slump. It happens every year when I finish letters about lit. 2y

I flew through this month‘s #LMPBC Group A pick. Phenomenal artwork! This one has a lot to say, and it‘s geared perfectly to MG which isn‘t always an easy balance for authors to find with tough topics. #LGBTGBookBingo #AnimalFriend #BBRC Middle Grade Western

@LibrarianRyan the books for this round seem to have stacked up, so I‘m going to wait and read Beetle & the Hollowbones too before I drop this in the mail.

WanderingBookaneer @LibrarianRyan : I haven‘t received any books this month. I have read this one (my pick), Lowriders in Space, and Beetle & the Hollowbones. What is the fourth book? 2y
LibrarianRyan @WanderingBookaneer animals. And I have only had it a week. It will get mailed this week though. I‘ll try to finish it today. You are actually ahead. As for our other LMPBC, I have not received any of the books. 2y
WanderingBookaneer @LibrarianRyan : No rush. I just wasn‘t sure. Also 😳 about other groups. My poetry group is a bit of a disaster this round. I‘ve only received one book! 2y
