The Girl who Could Breathe Under Water
The Girl who Could Breathe Under Water: A Novel | Erin Bartels
7 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
"An anonymous letter from a Very Disappointed Reader sends a novelist back to the lake where she spent her childhood summers in order to prove that what she wrote happened the way she'd remembered. But the truth turns out to be far more complicated, showing that sometimes the story we think we're telling is another story altogether"--

Kendra is a successful author under pressure to finish her latest book which is being translated into German. She convinces her editor that she will be more productive if she returns to Hidden Lake, Michigan to the cabin she recently inherited from her grandfather. The return brings mixed feelings and unanswered questions as she revisits memories from her past. Trigger warning topics:child abuse, drug and alcohol use and resulting tragedies.

About half way through the book, I could predict the plot and the eventual ending. Many stories accepted as truth as a child prove to be anything but the reality of the situation. The story does address some potentially triggering topics regarding child abuse, drug and alcohol use and resulting tragedies. Ultimately, the book does include a side love story and the truth of Kendra's past.

I feel like I should start by saying this isn't “my“ kind of book. This book is sad, and the ending is bittersweet. But I didn't mind it as much as I usually do, because this book also felt real, and sometimes in real life it actually is too late to fix something you desperately wish you could fix.

Kendra is telling this story to her best friend, Cami, so the book is a mix of first person with a strong second person aspect, which was a little ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) weird at first, but began to feel more natural as the story progressed. Kendra grew up spending her summers on a lake in northern Michigan, staying with her grandpa - Cami lived across the lake, so they were summer friends. Now, Kendra's grandpa is dead, no one has heard from Cami in months, and Kendra has returned to the lake for the first time in almost a decade, trying to find the spark to start her second book. I honestly don't know ⬇ 2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) how to describe this book exactly. I think in mind it was going to be more suspenseful, but it's not. It's really a story about the cycles of sexual abuse, about bitterness and forgiveness, and about how every person has a story that explains - even if it can't justify - their actions. This was a gently thoughtful book that never felt exploitative, with several very sensitive topics handled well. It also felt like this book wasn't doing ⬇ 2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) doing too much. Lately I've noticed a tendency for authors to just grab a huge handful of buzzwords and shove them in all over the place, but I thought Bartels did a good job of keeping her focus, which gave her story a higher impact. This wasn't an easy book to read, but I found it worthwhile nonetheless.

I wasn't a huge fan of the love interest, just because that was the only part that didn't feel completely natural, especially when ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) we found out how he got there... it did feel a little stalkerish to me. That character is also German, and I don't know why, but the inclusion of just random German phrases with no translation drove me crazy, even though it only happened a handful of times. I wouldn't have minded as much if Kendra had said something like “he murmured a phrase in German that I couldn't understand“ but instead she literally writes it out in German, and ⬇ 2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) says something like, “I wished I knew what he was saying.“ Very distracting. I also had never even heard of the movie Beaches and it was weirdly an important point, with Kendra and Cami (as teens) arguing about which of them was which character... that chapter left me floundering a bit as I had ZERO idea what they were talking about, and then it kept reappearing after that! But despite minor niggles, this was an overall pick. 2y
Cinfhen Seems like those little niggles would have driven me NUTS!!! 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - The German thing especially was driving me CRAZY. If you don't want the reader to know what he's saying, why write the entire thing out? If you are okay with the reader knowing what he's saying, why not INCLUDE A FOOTNOTE TO TELL ME WHAT IT MEANS!? Instead, I'm here typing into a translate box trying to figure out what he's saying when I could be reading!!! 2y
Cinfhen That‘s dedication on your behalf 🙌🏻🤓where was the editor???? 2y

HNY to you all, my beautiful, much treasured friends! I love you. ❤
For the past 5 yrs, I've aimed to read 52 books in 52 weeks, a feat to me that seems impossible every year. I also love film, tv, puzzles, music, family time, and I refuse to give any of that up. This yr, I didn't I think I'd made it, but somehow I exceeded my goal. 61!! (not 62 as it shows. I think goodreads is too overwhelmed by other NYE partiers for correction bandwidth. ;))

Erin Bartels is an awesome writer. She is now on my list of authors who are automatic reads. Kendra Brennan is a novelist who is having trouble writing her 2nd book. She has received a letter from 'A Very Disappointed Reader' who claims that she did not tell the truth in her first book. She is planning to confront Tyler, the man who she wrote about, & prove that she told the truth about what happened at the lake where she spent long-ago summers.

EadieB Hopefully then she will be able to meet the deadline for her next book.
The book is written in the first person and Kendra is speaking to Cami, her friend and sister of Tyler, who has gone missing. But what Kendra discovers as she delves into the murky past is not what she expected.

EadieB It is a book about friendship, family love, sexual abuse and forgiveness. It is a painful and emotional exploration for Kendra and Erin Bartels, the author, who has experienced sexual abuse herself. I was touched by Erin's message to her readers and hope that she has found some peace from laying her heart on her sleeve and expressing her feelings so beautifully. 2y
EadieB If you enjoy heartfelt books, then you should definitely read this one. I would like to thank LibraryThing and Revell Publishers for giving me a free copy and the experience of reading and reviewing this book. 2y

“You had more friends than I ever would. Each summer you dropped their names more and more. They were tributaries that flowed into the Great River Cami, feeding you, always feeding you. I was the dry creek that, paradoxically, only ran in the summer. Was I even on the map?”
NOTE: this is not a mermaid book, I just couldn't help but to pair these two. Gorgeous.
