Nobody Gets Out Alive
Nobody Gets Out Alive: Stories | Leigh Newman
9 posts | 6 read | 7 to read
From the prizewinning, debut fiction author: an exhilarating virtuosic story collection about women navigating the wilds of male-dominated Alaskan society. Set in Newmans home state of Alaska, Nobody Gets Out Alive is a collection of dazzling, courageous stories about women struggling to survive not just grizzly bears and charging moose but the raw, exhausting legacy of their marriages and families. In Howl Palacewinner of The Paris Reviews Terry Southern Prize, a Best American Short Story, and Pushcart Prize selectionan aging widow struggles with a rogue hunting dog and the memories of her five ex-husbands while selling her house after bankruptcy. In the title story, Nobody Gets Out Alive, newly married Katrina visits her hometown of Anchorage and blows up her own wedding reception by flirting with the host and running off with an enormous mastodon tusk. Alongside stories set in todays Last Frontierrife with suburban sprawl, global warming, and opioid addictionNewman delves into remote wilderness of the 1970s and 80s, bringing to life young girls and single moms in search of a wilder, freer, more adventurous America. The final story takes place in a railroad camp in 1915, where an outspoken heiress stages an elaborate theatrical in order to seduce the wife of her husbands employer, revealing how this masterful storyteller is not only writing unforgettable, brilliantly complex characters, shes somehow inventing souls (Kimberly King Parsons, author of Black Light).

^^ mothers, the clairvoyant‘s best clients, needing to understand their children, needing to understand who they might have been

P227 “My idea of love was to keep the person you left from getting upset—and sending you away.”

P231 “Some part of me reminded myself that my life is not that unique, that this is why she can name my losses with such accuracy.”

P9 “Maybe the reason you shout so much, Dutch, is that you really long to whisper.”

Linked stories tight with buried loss & longing. Characters wandering in & out at different ages. Misbehavior & missed chances. Rainbow salmon. Float planes. Costco. Hitchhiking. Artistic ambition. No-see-ums. Tent camps. Clairvoyants. Alaska: leaving & returning. “A lobotomy‘s worth” as a unit of measurement. Killer observations. So strong, so open to a reread. Who writes like this? Alice Munro, with a hunting knife? Brutal & brilliant. 2022

I always need to concentrate to get involved in a #ShortStoryCollection. They are often over before I‘ve become invested or I get impatient and start skimming to the next one. There are exceptions of course, lots fortunately, but this one isn‘t. I enjoyed the setting (Alaska) but not so much the characters or the storylines. #Booked2023

Billypar I read a couple collections a year and usually enjoy them, but not enough to read as much as novels I guess. 2y
BarbaraBB @Billypar I do too and I often enjoy them but less often than I love my novels I guess. But I‘ve read really good things about this one and I know that short-story-queen @Megabooks loved it, so it really is me 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
Cinfhen It‘s hard for me to find a collection where I enjoy all the stories & I agree that often the abrupt endings are annoying but this collection was great 2y

BarbaraBB @Cinfhen That‘s the one you reviewed yesterday! I‘ll stack it, thanks 😘 2y
Megabooks Sorry this wasn‘t a win for you! 2y
Suet624 I totally understand the short story conundrum. I have the same issue. 2y
Centique Your photo is gorgeous though! It really stood out as I scrolled through 😍 like a breath of fresh air. I try a few short story collections each year but I do struggle to finish most of them because of that. 2y
BarbaraBB @Centique Thank you 🩷 2y

#WeeklyForecast 16/23

I am reading But You Seemed So Happy, which I bought due to recommendations by @Megabooks and @Suet624 . It‘s good and relatable.
Next will be the tagged one and I also hope to read Big Swiss. Reviews are mixed but @batsy ‘s review made me impulse-buy it anyway!

Suet624 Now I feel the pressure about the Harrington book! 2y
BarbaraBB @Suet624 No need. I am enjoying it a lot, although enjoying might not be the right word for the subject! 2y
batsy And I feel the pressure about Big Swiss 😅 really hope you like it! 2y

Cinfhen I bought the Harrington book too! Waiting to hear your thoughts - also curious about how you‘ll like Big Swiss 🙃It might work for you 2y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I am very curious what you‘ll think of the Harrington! And I know you didn‘t like Big Swiss much, after which I unstacked, but then you @batsy made me so curious again. And I loved the cover so I thought I‘d give it a try! 2y
Suet624 I loved big Swiss. Can‘t wait to see what you think of it. 2y
TrishB Have a good week 👍🏻 2y
Megabooks Swiss was fantastic! Glad you‘re enjoying the essays too. 2y
Megabooks I was just thinking of rereading that essay collection. So strange that you picked it up this weekend. Perhaps all our camp litsy emails have given me esp! 😂😂 now if I could just guess what @squirrelbrain is reading! 2y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks such a coincidence that I just now pick it up! I‘ve had it on my shelves ever since you recommended it! 2y
squirrelbrain I wondered if Big Swiss might be nominated for #camplitsy23 🤔. I‘m just about to post a review for one book that I‘ve just finished @megabooks - very sad / traumatic. And I‘m just about to start one with a swear word in the title - that‘s all you‘re getting in the way of clues…! 😁 2y
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain It probably will, it‘s just published 🤷🏻‍♀️? And @Megabooks no doubt knows what book you are reading 🔮💟 2y
Megabooks I would totally reread BS and think it would be an interesting one to discuss. So curious about how our campers will vote and what they‘ll nominate! Helen, a swear word…hmmm… I cannot think of it! Maybe my powers are on the fritz. 😂😂 @squirrelbrain 2y
squirrelbrain I think you forgot to plug your crystal ball in, @Megabooks ! 🤣 2y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain that is a fantastic book!! It was a knockoff crystal ball. That‘s probably why is wasn‘t working. Last time I order one from Amazon…😂😂 2y
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @Megabooks That‘s one I have ready to read as well. So many books! 2y
squirrelbrain LOL @Megabooks 🤣🤣🤣 2y

I enjoyed this debut collection of stories about people navigating life, their hopes & fears, family, regrets, & the natural world in Alaska which, quite frankly, is one of my favorite places to read about. As big & complex as Alaska is, so too are the people who call it home especially the sisters, daughters, & single mothers who feature prominently in a number of stories. Wise, filled with humor & heartache, wonder & hope, this was a good read.

This is a terrific story collection showing various lives in Alaska. Not only is each story quite good, but they all come together well as a cohesive collection, with the exception of the final story, which felt out of place to me. I otherwise enjoyed this tremendously.

BarbaraBB I‘m having this one my shelves too. Looking forward to it. 2y
Megabooks 💯 agree again! 2y

Anyone who has watched the Discovery Channel knows Alaska is different. The terrain is less forgiving, and Newman takes these harsh conditions and uses them to bring out interpersonal truths among friends and family members. My favorite was an ambitious novella told from five points of view about two friends traveling through Canada who meet a single mom while hitchhiking. Wonderful twist at the end!

Very sorry this didn‘t make the NBA shortlist!

Hooked_on_books I‘ve always been fascinated by Alaska, so I‘m looking forward to this one. 2y
Cinfhen Like the concept for this collection - another #BorrowNotBuy for me 😜 2y
BarbaraBB Looking forward to it! 2y

vivastory So, I haven't really been following the NBA longlist & shortlist except via the posts on Litsy. However I did see that Tawada's book made the translated shortlist which makes me inordinately happy as it's a favorite of the year. It's the only one on the translated SL that I have read, but I have heard intriguing things about the Fosse & the Ojeda. If I recall you read the Schweblin. How did you like it? 2y
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB I hope you both enjoy it! I think you will. Have either of you read 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen 👍🏻👍🏻 2y
Megabooks @vivastory yes, Tawada is on my to-buy list when my wallet recovers! Very much looking forward to getting it this year. The Schweblin was good. Much more literary fiction and gothic compared to her other books. It didn‘t read as much horror as prior ones, but I still very much enjoyed it. However it hasn‘t stuck with me. When I reflect back I can still feel the loneliness I felt reading many of the stories, but I don‘t remember plots. 2y
Megabooks @vivastory I hope ⬆️ helps! 2y
vivastory That's very helpful! I loved Fever Dream, but was a bit disappointed by Little Eyes. I will definitely temper my expectations for this one 2y
Hooked_on_books I have not read Maria, Maria yet, but it‘s saved to my queue on Scribd, so hopefully I‘ll get to it soon, as well as this one. 2y
