Have you ever met a woman so beautiful you knew instinctively you would die for her? The Duke of Dorset, one of the many undergrads at Oxford University, sees as his only option committing suicide to prove his love for the astonishingly attractive Zuleika Dobson. A witty and engaging satire which pokes fun at the Edwardian upperclass college experience, Max Beerbohm's Zuleika Dobson makes all too plain the dangers of growing up wealthy and emotionally detached, while showing that when you place a high premium on aesthetics at the most impressionable time in one's life, the results really are "to die for."

Mehso-so

This is billed as a satire and it turns out to be, if you can get through the treacly sweet first quarter where the titular character and the Duke (both exquisitely vapid specimens of entitled youth and beauty) fall in love at first sight. Ludicrous plotting ensues, designed to expose the ridiculousness of Oxford culture and a particular brand of romance. The narrator‘s female voices are grating. I ended up listening at 2.5 speed. #LitsyAtoZ #Z

Mamashep 2 1/2 speed? That is bad! 7y
BookishMarginalia @Mamashep Yep, I really wanted to get it over with. (Worth it, though, to get to the scene of dinner at Judas College... how the dons handle the empty room is priceless!) 7y

I plan to start a new book tonight, so I'm taking a page from @ReadingEnvy 's book and doing a round of speed dating with these five titles. Sort of a strange combo, isn't it?

Thanks again for recommending Zuleika Dobson, @Moray_Reads

LeahBergen That's one that has been on my radar for years. Let me know how the sampling goes! 😘 8y
Prairiegirl_reading All our wrong todays sounds so good but I fear it might be too far down the tbr..... 🙁 I would like to know the outcome as well! 8y
batsy @LeahBergen Yes, mine too! And ideally once you start Mapp and Lucia @saresmoore you won't want to stop 💜 8y

saresmoore @LeahBergen @Prairiegirl_reading Sympathy was the winner for tonight. I think All Our Wrong Todays is just not for me. I really enjoyed my samplings of Mapp & Lucia and Zuleika Dobson; will probably start them soon. The biggest surprise was Tambor's memoir! It's hilarious and I think I'm going to love it. 8y
saresmoore @batsy I sampled a random page from each to get a feel. Sympathy won for tonight, mostly because it has to go back to the library, but I can already tell I'm going to love Mapp & Lucia. The style of Zuleika Dobson feels very formal, but I think it will be good! 8y
Prairiegirl_reading I bet Tambor's memoir is really good on audio. I need to try speed dating. 😄 8y
ReadingEnvy Awesome. 8y
batsy @saresmoore That's great. I look forward to your thoughts on Sympathy! 8y
Moray_Reads It's okay, didn't love it. My main thought was it's quick and easy to get through and Behind with Z! If it doesn't suit maybe try 8y
Suet624 Haha. Nice approach to selecting a book. I go by library due dates and Litsy approval ratings. 😀 8y
saresmoore @Suet624 Library due date definitely has an (anxiety-related) influence on my choices! Especially those darn 14-day loans. They do not jive with my polyandering reading approach. 8y

Pickpick

part of my plan to finish modern library's 100 best books (one list at a time) which is started before discovering this place.

Max Beerbohm is Wodehouse made a bit more mature and a bit more frivolous. some critic called Wodehouse's work 'Eden before the fall'. Beerbohm, at least in Zuleika Dobson is Eden continuously falling and rising.
