Out at the Movies: A History of Gay Cinema | Steven Paul Davies, Simon Callow
3 posts | 1 read
Over the decades, gay cinema has reflected the community's journey from persecution to emancipation to acceptance. Politicized dramas like Victim in the 1960s, The Naked Civil Servant in the 1970s, and the AIDS cinema of the 1980s have given way in recent years to films which celebrate a vast array of gay lifestyles. Gay films have undergone a major shift from the fringe to the mainstream2005s Academy Awards were dubbed "the gay Oscars" with statues going to Brokeback Mountain, Capote, and Transamerica. Producers began clamoring to back gay-themed movies and the most high profile of these is Gus Van Sants forthcoming Milk, starring Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, the first prominent American political figure to be elected to office on an openly gay ticket back in the 1970s. The book also covers gay filmmakers and actors and their influence within the industry, the most iconic scenes from gay cinema, and the most memorable dialogue from key films.

#TLT @dabbe

I guess I just don‘t like popular movies. The 23 that I watched on this list mostly Superhero, Disney or Marvel, I saw against my will. 😆 The price of being a mother of teenagers during those years.

Favorites are the Harry Potter movies, the Hobbit and I liked the new Top Gun.

dabbe I couldn't believe all of the franchise movies and sequels in this group! And, you still kicked my sorry 🫏! Thanks for playing and sharing! 🤩🤩🤩 2mo

What are the chances no one else shows for this movie and I get a private screening of Three Identical Strangers? 📽

Rushed out of the house to make the show, but remembered my #jb mail for the post office later on!📫

Do I stop at the B&N next door or not? 😬

Soubhiville Fun! I love when that happens! I went to an early morning of Les Mis and saw it with just my friend. And yes of course you go to the bookstore!!! 6y
