They have told me this before. Most of it anyway.

This may be the basics, but it's also the FUNDAMENTALS.

This is a really good summary of self care and simple therapeutic tools to manage symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress, grief, & emotional turbulence.

Later chapters on attachment and living within ones own values also provide invaluable information.

It won't cure your problems, but I would endorse this book as a good place to start.

Santie I liked this book because of the simple writing as compared to most other self help books. Even though, as you said, these are things we‘ve been told before, she tells it in a simple way that make it worthwhile 🌻 9mo
RaeLovesToRead @Santie I also love how she doesn't over promise (like most self help books). She just presents what we know in an accessible format and gives us a reminder to bring our focus back to what matters 🙂 9mo

This is something that can be difficult to understand for people who are naturally cheerful, because what can be the harm in positivity, right?

Sadly, it can feel very lonely and alienating if it jars with your inner experience.

It's OK to stop trying to gaslight yourself.

I recommend cat pictures, self-deprecating humour, distraction, music, videogames, tea, ranting & light exercise instead.

Whatever gets you through!

You're not alone 🫂

Bookwomble Toxic positivity is toxic! ☣️ 9mo
ImperfectCJ Reminds me of this book I read---and related to---years ago. It introduced me to the term "defensive pessimism." 9mo

RaeLovesToRead @Bookwomble @ImperfectCJ Shout out to my fellow grumps! 😁💕 Don't get me wrong, there are many positive nuggets that I've drunk in and found comfort from over the years. It's nice not to have to put on a front all the time though. I find a sense of humour is the biggest blessing. 9mo
RaeLovesToRead @Bookwomble @ImperfectCJ Someone posted this one the other day too and it made me giggle... 9mo
kassandrik Toxic positivity is just the worst! All emotions matter if they are not leading to aggression and harm. Also, speaking out loud own worries sometimes works better if we want to reduce power of anxiety. 9mo
Cuilin @Bookwomble So toxic! I think it‘s a way of communicating “Please don‘t tell me how you really feel.” As a neurodivergent I hate it!! 9mo
RaeLovesToRead @kassandrik @Cuilin The absolute WORST affirmation is "happiness is a choice" ???? 9mo
kassandrik “Just think positively. You choose the way you think. Negativity is in your head“ That's what I dislike to hear :(
Usually, when I hear these statements, I just want to remind people about the power of emotional validation. If someone is sad or unhappy, just be there and listen. It is much more empowering than “Be happy!“ attitude

RaeLovesToRead @kassandrik Yes. And no two brains are alike. We're all sitting in very different emotional and cognitive environments to start off with. What works for one may not work for another 💙 9mo
The_Penniless_Author 💯 We've discussed this topic before, so you know I'm in total agreement. Shout out to my favorite anti-faux-positivity book 9mo
RaeLovesToRead @The_Penniless_Author Yup, although you are the cheery recipient of maaaaany miserable, ranty emails from Yours Truly so be careful what you wish for 😉😇 9mo
Bookwomble @Cuilin Sad is a valid emotion that we ignore at our peril. As a fellow neurodivergent, I'm trying not to mask so much & to accept & learn from what my emotions are communicating. Feeling the loss of a public figure last week, I consoled myself by reading aloud, in my best theatrical voice, the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, a poem about the fleetingness of life, the inevitability of death, the likelihood of oblivion, & felt much better for it! 9mo
Cuilin @Bookwomble I‘ve been married for 26 years and I‘m just beginning to unmask around my in-laws. 😮‍💨 I‘m definitely checking out that poem. May I ask what public figure? And I‘m sorry for your sadness. 🥰 9mo
Bookwomble @Cuilin I've only "come out" to a few people. Those who know me best said, "No shit, Sherlock!", so I've felt supported and accepted. I hope your in-laws are understanding ? It was a singer I like, Steve Harley. I posted about him at this tag #TuesdayTunes It activated some of my personal loss, too, but I think being connected with that is beneficial in processing it. I hope you like the Rubáiyát; it's one of my favourites, especially the 1st ed. 9mo

I took my sweet time reading this book. It is written in clear and simple language and without a lot of the jargon that is thrown around unnecessary online these days. It‘s a realistic perspective on simple steps that can be taken to create a better life experience. 3.5/5 ⭐️

A wonderful and easy read. It's a simple guide for maintaining good mental health with different sections and different chapters on topics like relationships, anxiety, stress, the importance of self-compassion, gratitude and mindfulness. I really wish I'd read it in 2019, would've saved me a lot of time and tears.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone and everyone, especially if you feel concerned about mental health.

At this point I‘m a recovering book buyer and aspiring book reader. But oh well. Always keep friends that buy you books.

I think the author has done a really good job in putting all this information into one book, as I feel like I've read a lot of this before, but in different books. It's so useful to have it all together in one book. It doesn't delve too deeply, but there is enough information to be useful.

Personally, I think it's a book I will go back to again and again for reference, as the many page tabs I have used would testify.

A bunch of this is common sense, but it‘s nice to read and help take yourself back down to earth during periods of struggle and uncertainty. Not sure how much I took away from my reading experience, but I can‘t say anything negative about it. Not life changing for me but might work well for others.
