Half Empty | David Rakoff
12 posts | 11 read | 1 reading | 7 to read
The inimitably witty David Rakoff, New York Times bestselling author of Dont Get Too Comfortable, defends the commonsensical notion that you should always assume the worst, because youll never be disappointed. In this deeply funny (and, no kidding, wise and poignant) book, Rakoff examines the realities of our sunny, gosh everyone-can-be-a-star contemporary culture and finds that, pretty much as a universal rule, the best is not yet to come, adversity will triumph, justice will not be served, and your dreams wont come true. The book ranges from the personal to the universal, combining stories from Rakoffs reporting and accounts of his own experiences: the moment when being a tiny child no longer meant adults found him charming but instead meant other children found him a fun target; the perfect late evening in Manhattan when he was young and the city seemed to brim with such possibility that the street shimmered in the moonlightas he drew closer he realized the streets actually flickered with rats in a feeding frenzy. He also weaves in his usual brand Oscar Wildeworthy cultural criticism (the tragedy of Hollywoods Walk of Fame, for instance). Whether hes lacerating the musical Rent for its cutesy depiction of AIDS or dealing with personal tragedy, his sharp observations and humorists flair for the absurd will have you positively reveling in the power of negativity. This edition includes an excerpt from David Rakoff's Love, Dishonor, Marry, Die, Cherish, Perish.

This is one of my favorite discoveries so far from this year‘s focus on reading down my TBR list. Similar to David Sedaris, but a touch darker, I really enjoyed listening to Rakoff‘s life views and experiences (audiobook is a must for this one!). I was so sad to read that he died two years after publishing this book, his last. Will be reading his other books, for sure!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rakoff‘s last essay collection, and easily my favorite of his books. It was during this work, he was diagnosed with cancer (again). The very last essay is devastating; you can hear the pain in his voice. He died a couple of years later. Such a loss. His writing was poignant and smart; darkly humorous and witty.

kspenmoll Wonderful review! 5y
britt_brooke @kspenmoll Thanks, friend! 💚 5y
Maria514626 He‘s brilliant. I miss him so. Have you heard his essays on This American Life? 💕 5y
britt_brooke @Maria514626 Not yet, but I plan to look for them and listen! 5y

The sunniest most positive child laboring in a fucking sneaker factory can visualize all the good fortune he wants, but without concrete changes in international models of global trade, finance, and educational opportunities, along with some very temporal man-made policies, just for starters, guess where he's going tomorrow morning? (A hint: it rhymes with schmucking sneaker factory).

That somewhat happy and somewhat sad feeling when you've packed most of the books because you move in less than 2 weeks! I'm out of boxes for today, so time for tea and a reading break before bed.

Ashley_Nicoletto I always get a little depressed when I pack up my books. It's like I think I might never see them again. 😂😂😂 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Ashley_Nicoletto Yes! That's it exactly! I've lost some in moving before, so it's a real fear for me. 7y
Soubhiville @Riveted_Reader_Melissa oh no! That's a horror story! @Ashley_Nicoletto it does feel like that! Also, even though I have about 50 unread books on my kindle, I feel like I might want one of the ones in the box before I go! 7y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Soubhiville Right! I hate horror novels, but for me that's scary! 😂. And isn't that always the way, as soon as you can't get to it, that's the one you want to read next! 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto @Soubhiville Yep! I know this feeling. I can't put it away because what if I want to read it? 😱 Even though it's been sitting on my shelf for 6 years and I haven't wanted to yet. 😂😂 7y
drokka Went through the that myself recently. Then there's a photo tag that you really want to do and you actually consider opening a box (or more of its not in the one you thought it was in). 7y
Avanders Oh I love packing my books bc the unpacking is like a thousand mini happy reunions that make setting up your new home joyful. But I'm weird like that.... 😜 (edited) 7y
LibrarianRyan I feel your pain oh so much. 7y
BookishTrish I moved three weeks ago and I'm sure it'll take a year to recover. Thinking of you! 7y
AmyG Good luck with your move. I am moving in 3 ish months so I understand. 7y

#riotgrams #favoritequotes I love David Rakoff. I was so sad when he passed away a few years ago. First heard him on This American Life and his was the stuff of genius. witty and heartfelt. His books are wonderful and his appearances on Wire Tapped are among the most hysterical stuff I have heard. His absence is still felt.

Mortality was always Rakoff's great subject, perhaps, and in these essays it's distilled to its purest, archly hilarious form. My favorite was the set 'A Capacity for Wonder: Three Expeditions', to a Disney Dream Home, Hollywood, and Salt Lake City.

Constantly witty and dripping with snark, yet self-deprecating enough to be likeable and charming. David Rakoff is the only person who could pull this book off. I love it.

A friend of mine is pregnant and having trouble reading. I am hoping that one of these can help her out. *ignore the brand new unwanted cat scratcher 😤
