Faces In The Water
Faces In The Water | Janet Frame
9 posts | 7 read | 16 to read
Faces in the Water draws on the experiences of Janet Frame's early life, but it also explores the world of the mind - isolated and inarticulate - showcasing Frame's wisdom, compassion and genius. In Faces in the Water (first published in 1961), Janet Frame responded to her doctor's suggestion that 'as I was obviously suffering from the effects of my long stay in hospital in New Zealand, I should write my story of that time to give me a clearer view of the future.' This writing evolved into an intensely imagined, fictionalised account in which the protagonist, Istina Mavet, moves in and out of mental hospitals, facing the terrors of electric-shock treatment and the threat of a leucotomy. This riveting novel became an international classic translated into nine languages.

This book broke me. Istina Mavet, our narrator, details her time in two mental asylums. The treatment of the inmates by society, their families, the staff, and each other is so painfully realistic. It‘s a sad, frustrating, disturbing, beautiful read. The prose alone is worth the effort. 211/1,001 #1001Books

Wow. @sprainedbrain this was a tough one. So disturbing...a walk inside the dark recesses in the mind of a severely mentally ill woman. I can‘t say I “enjoyed” the book but conversely, I still rate it a pick. And I‘m glad I read it. It feels like I finally have a TINY bit of understanding what it must be like to suffer from mental illness to the point of delusions. Thank you for exposing me to it. #LMPBC

(It will be returning home on Monday)

Finally finished my #LMPBC round 5 #groupT.

This was definitely not an easy subject—it‘s fiction, but considering the author spent a lot of time in and out of psychiatric hospitals and came very close to being lobotomized herself, these harrowing experiences inside different facilities and struggles with mental health are very impactful. The writing is amazing: some of the descriptions are just poetic.

The perfect answer to one of her characters' s question "My God, what does it mean to shut the soul in a hospital?" ask a doctor in Cliffhaven's mental hospital. It's a strong, tangible evidence of the saving power of literature. Lobotomy was spared to Frame just a day before due date because she reached the status of Writer. My gratitude to her suffering and to those allowing us to read her work and know better human soul.

#HeatOfJuly #day5 #BlurredLines In a huge coincidence, today‘s #BookMail Pt1 has these amazing blurred lines on the cover with faces hidden in them. This is the 5th #ViragoModernClassics I‘ve added to my collection & is one of the most striking. With a foreword by Hilary Mantel, it should be a great read as well.👍

I didn't notice the creepy faces until I looked at the picture for this post. Part of reissues in new editions for Virago's 40th anniversary.
