Neema‘s family moved to Crosslanes, WV for her father‘s job. (Just an hr from me) They were one of the very few Indian families in the region. Neema writes about feeling included in the community and her love for the culture of her home. The mountains still feel like home to her even though many of the people she grew up with have fallen into hatred for much of what she stands for now. I related to many of the essays and loved the audio!

JamieArc I picked this book up during Independent Bookstore Day. I hadn‘t heard of it before. Glad to see it reviewed here! 11mo

I so enjoyed this essay collection especially the author‘s deep love a place and a community that hasn‘t always loved her back with the same openness and understanding. Much of what she wrote really resonated with me. The audio version is short and well worth a listen.

Neema Avashia paints a vivid portrait of her upbringing as part of a Gujarati Indian family living in West Virginia, from the neighbors who became her family to her struggles with gender identity as a young queer girl in a Hindu family and Christian community. Incredibly insightful and engaging. Definitely one to read for memoir fans.

Neema Avashia has written a really engaging collection of essays that detail her personal experiences growing up queer and Indian in West Virginia in the 80s and 90s while touching on universal themes of identity building and defining home. Definitely recommend!
