The Runes of the Earth
The Runes of the Earth: The Last Chronicles of Thomas Convenant | Stephen R. Donaldson
7 posts | 8 read | 4 to read
More than twenty years ago, Stephen R. Donaldson set a literary landmark with the first fantasy bestseller. His New York Times bestselling series, The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, transformed modern fantasy. Now, at long last, Donaldson introduces the first novel of the much-awaited, four-volume finale to the series that's sold more than ten million copies. Thomas Covenant lost everything. Abandoned by his wife and child, sick and alone, he was transported while unconscious to a magical, dreamlike world called the Land. Convinced it was all a delusion, Covenant was christened The Unbeliever by the Land's inhabitants-but gave his life to save this newfound world he came to regard as precious. Ten years after Covenant's death, Linden Avery still mourns for her beloved companion. But a violent confrontation with Covenant's son- who is doing the evil Lord Foul's bidding-forces her back to the Land, where a dark malevolence is about to unmake the laws of nature-and of life and death itself.

#CastleontheHill made me think of Revelstone, the fortress giants carved out of the Westron mountains. I tagged book one of the Final Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever because that‘s where this particular map first appears, but please note there are six books before this one! #WanderingJune

gradcat Love the name of this hero...Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever...so ancient sounding. 5y

I found The Runes of the Earth with the #coolcover (top R) that matches the rest of my set of The Last Chronicles! The original book 1 (bot L) is lovely, but the rest (& an unrelated book of novellas) had awesome cover art by John Jude Palencar. I figured it was too costly to buy a new copy just for the cover but I found it for $1.00 at the book sale last weekend! The 4 book series + The King's Justice = a pretty #fivestack #ReadingResolutions

Marmie7 😍 These are amazing! 6y

#Littens: if a book has a glossary, do you read it first, refer to it as needed, save it for the end, or skip it altogether? I read it every time; I don't feel like I've completed the book otherwise. With this series, I save it until the end because sometimes, there are #spoilers! I've read these books before, but I want to rediscover the story as I go. I've forgotten enough that it's almost like reading them for the first time. #BookishProblems

Christinak I'm with you on the waiting. Sometimes I refer as I read but most often I read it afterward and wish I referred to it as I was reading 😊 7y
MCYmermaid I vary; I often don't mind spoilers unless what I am reading has a significant puzzle element. 7y

Misty-eyed, I finished White Gold Wielder earlier this evening. I then spent some time thinking about the differences between the 1st trilogy & the 2nd before I started The Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. I'm now 1600 pages away from starting the last book & I'm experiencing that odd state that I know Littens understand: wanting to devour these books, yet savour every last word, to put off reading the last page as long as possible. #EpicReread

andrew61 I read these ages ago and then put my 6 volumes on a table top sale! Its another book i regret losing as i have always wanted to reread as they were wonderful one although it would require a big commitment. 7y
TK-421 @andrew61 It is a big commitment (10 books, a total of over 5000 pages) but worth it, in my opinion. I've read the first 6 books about 4 times now, and the first 2 books of the Last Chronicles twice, I think. I bought the final book ages ago, but I didn't want to read it until I'd reread all the books. I'm glad that I waited; now I get to binge-read the series in its entirety! 7y

My afirst post on Litsy!! I know everyone is coming here from bookstagram (@for_theloveofbooks) but I'm only here to check it out, and I'm learning how to use it slowly!
So this book; 'The Runes of the Earth' by Stephen Donaldson is on my to read list this year, although it is a bit beefy and so I may not start it until the gap between receiving my GCSE results and returning to school for sixth form.
It sounds incredible though!!!
