Prohibition: Thirteen Years That Changed America
Prohibition: Thirteen Years That Changed America | Edward Behr
5 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
From the bestselling author of "The Last Emperor" comes this rip-roaring history of the government s attempt to end America s love affair with liquor which failed miserably. On January 16, 1920, America went dry. For the next thirteen years, the Eighteenth Amendment prohibited the making, selling, or transportation of intoxicating liquors, heralding a new era of crime and corruption on all levels of society. Instead of eliminating alcohol, Prohibition spurred more drinking than ever before. Formerly law-abiding citizens brewed moonshine, became rum- runners, and frequented speakeasies. Druggists, who could dispense medicinal quantities of alcohol, found their customer base exploding overnight. So many people from all walks of life defied the ban that Will Rogers famously quipped, Prohibition is better than no liquor at all. Here is the full, rollicking story of those tumultuous days, from the flappers of the Jazz Age and the beautiful and the damned who drank their lives away in smoky speakeasies to bootlegging gangsters Pretty Boy Floyd, Bonnie and Clyde, Al Capone and the notorious St. Valentine s Day Massacre. Edward Behr paints a portrait of an era that changed the country forever."

A history of the 13 years of Prohibition in the U.S. Some of the information was interesting, but I found the narrative to be uneven. 2/5 stars

Sorry I forgot to post this earlier, but I got your package!😊 Yours was already to go until I tried to mail it and was told the average citizen cannot mail wine....sorry friend, but Ill think of you while I drink it. Going to add something else hopefully just as fun and Ill get it out ASAP.

JoScho Lol man the USPS won‘t let us have any fun! 6y
Tera66 @JoScho Nor will FedEx or UPS😂 6y
cswaingiggles Aw that‘s sad but also okay. I LOVE wine but am also currently pregnant so it would have gotten to wait a bit. You will just have to enjoy it extra for me as I miss wine lol 6y
Tera66 @cswaingiggles OH MY GOSH! CONGRATULATIONS! How exciting! 6y
cswaingiggles @Tera66 Thanks. I‘m at the crappy stage right now that makes me never want another kid again but thankfully it‘ll get better soon 😂 (edited) 6y

Celebrating Repeal Day at Richmond's very own speakeasy, Grandstaff & Stein. The mules here are fantastic (the drinks, not the animals). #repealday #prohibition #ToCastAKitten #drinkup
