Mustique Island: A Novel | Sarah McCoy
10 posts | 9 read | 7 to read
From bestselling author Sarah McCoy, a sun-splashed romp with a rich divorce and her two wayward daughters in 1970s Mustique, the worlds most exclusive private island, where Princess Margaret and Mick Jagger were regulars and scandals stayed hidden from the press. Its January 1972 but the sun is white hot when Willy May Michaels boat first kisses the dock of Mustique Isle. Tucked into the southernmost curve of the Caribbean, Mustique is a private island that has become a haven for the wealthy and privileged. Its owner is the eccentric British playboy Colin Tennant, who is determined to turn this speck of white sand into a luxurious neo-colonial retreat for his rich friends and into a royal court in exile for the Queens rebellious sister, Princess Margaretone where Her Royal Highness can skinny dip, party, and entertain lovers away from the public eye. Willy May, a former beauty queen from Texaswho is also no stranger to marital scandalsseeks out Mustique for its peaceful isolation. Determined to rebuild her life and her relationships with her two daughters, Hilly, a model, and Joanne, a musician, she constructs a fanciful white beach house across the island from Princess Margaretand finds herself pulled into the islands inner circle of aristocrats, rock stars, and hangers-on. When Willy Mays daughters arrive, they discover that beneath its veneer of decadence, Mustique has a dark side, and like sand caught in the undertow, their mother-daughter story will shift and resettle in ways they never could have imagined.

A wealthy American woman finds herself settling into life in #StVincentandtheGrenadines, hobnobbing with royalty. I‘m glad to check off the country, but I felt the story was a bit thin. I also didn‘t like what felt like a checkmark in the author noting in 3 sentences the disparities between black and white people and their circumstances on the island, then basically shrugging to off. Better not to mention it at all.

BarbaraBB That‘s irritating indeed. 6mo
Librarybelle I liked this one as a good distraction listen. It seemed very slow in parts. 6mo

On the surface, this reminded me of a quiet, lazy read, enjoying island life. But, digging deeper, there‘s more to the story. We hear three different women‘s voices, from the same family, who come to terms with the past through situations on the island. Some good, some bad. It‘s also a lesson in family and familial bonds and, in some ways, love. #ReadingtheAmericas2023 #SaintVincentandtheGrenadines

BarbaraBB That seems a good read! 1y

I soaked up this audio in the course of a day🌞While the rain stormed outside, I was lulled by the cool ocean breezes of #StVicentAndTheGrenadines 😎The perfect escape for a cold, dark day. I didn‘t think the inclusion of Princess Margaret or Mick Jagger was necessary but it added to the glitz & glamour of this exotic locale. The book took a swerve towards the end but still a fun pick for #ReadTheAmericas23

Librarybelle I‘m looking forward to this one! It‘ll probably be one of my first reads in 2023! 1y
Megabooks Yeah, the ending was a bit sad. 1y
Cinfhen It‘s a quick listen @Librarybelle - I hope you enjoy when you get around to it 1y
Cinfhen @Megabooks I was a little surprised by the abrupt switch from frothy to religious fervor - but in the end the author wrapped it all up nicely 1y

This novel based on a real-life Texas socialite who was an early resident of Musitique was an enjoyable, mostly lighthearted #audiobook. Cassandra Campbell‘s narration is perfect!

Willie Mae was a Texas beauty queen who married a rich British soldier and had two daughters. Now, she‘s divorced and sailing the world. When the owner of Mustique offers to left her build, she makes a home for herself and a soft place for her adult daughters to land.

Cinfhen This one is on my #weeklyforecast - using for the same prompts 😂 1y
Megabooks @Cinfhen it works well for the prompt! I enjoyed it, but it wasn‘t mind blowing. 1y

The real island that was the vacation spot for Princess Margaret. How did I come upon a royal based read?! Willy May decides to build a home, Firefly, on this same island that is visited by aristocrats and Mick Jagger! Good nostalgia if you have grown up in the seventies. Mother/daughter/sisters read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Nice atmospheric writing but not much story. The enigmatic Carribean island of Mustique attracts the wealthy, royals, and celebrities needing a holiday from us ordinary folk. A rich American socialite vacations there her two adult daughters hoping to reconnect while Princess Margaret and Mick Jagger make an appearance. Book was a bit meh.
