Sedating Elaine
Sedating Elaine: A Novel | Dawn Winter
3 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
Frances was not looking for a relationship when she met Elaine in a bar, but somehow Elaine ended up in Frances' bed and never left. Now, faced with mounting pressure from her drug dealer, Dom, Frances comes up with a terrible idea: she asks Elaine to move in with her for real. Unfortunately, this seemingly romantic overture makes Elaine even more sex-crazed and maniacal with love. Frances fears she may never escape the relationship, so, given no choice, she makes the obvious decision: she will sedate Elaine.

Mehso-so

If I give a pic to this book like I really want to, it would be a slap in the face to all my pics, so I can‘t. A woman makes some really baaaaad decisions stemming from childhood trauma and a recent heartbreak. That was fine up until the neatly tied bow in the end where there was no consequence for any of those bad decisions. I was happy for the MC but felt a little cheated, and like the author missed her chance at taking a chance.

batsy This sounds good; a most interesting so-so review! The setup sounds a bit Ottessa Moshfegh-esque. (Moshfegh-y? Lol) 1y
Ruthiella Too bad. I generally love these books about effed up behavior, but it does sound like a cop-out at the end. 1y
Reggie @batsy lol part of the review I erased was that as a reader I felt we were on the highway to Otessa Monsfeghs neighborhood but then took a left at Albuquerque into Candyland. 1y

Reggie @Ruthiella I say still try it because who knows. You might like it. And I did like it. I can‘t forgive that ending though. And there were a couple of times when the voice of who was telling the story disconnected for me. Like the author jumped in to say hey, this, and then jumped back out to continue the story. It was weird. 1y
Reggie @Batsy strike Candyland, let‘s say Emma Straubville. 1y
Rissreads What a shame! That cover is exquisite 🍌 💛 My favourite colour! 1y

Pickpick

I suspect this won‘t be most folks‘ cup of tea - I nearly bailed after the first SENTENCE - but I found it to be a quirky, deeply felt meditation on abandonment and attachment issues. Frances is a hot ass mess and while I was often exasperated with her actions, I was able to empathize with her A LOT. The basic set-up is rather farcical and isn‘t 100% successful, but this was a pleasant surprise. #TOB23Longlist #TOB2023

Cinfhen It‘s a quirky longlist!! I wonder how many of these books will go through though?? 1y
MicheleinPhilly @Cinfhen I‘m trying to be judicious with my reads that weren‘t previously on my radar. I only chose this because it was relatively short and immediately available from the library. I‘m glad I did though, regardless of whether it makes the shortlist. 1y

Cinfhen That‘s a good way to approach the long list. So far everything I read too, im happy with . I had read 18 previously and I think I like the “newer” books more. Im not sure I can predict what will move on but i have a few im rooting for!! (edited) 1y
BarbaraBB Sounds good Michelle! 1y

RebelReader Great review. I will probably give it a go in January! I‘m “booked” up right now! 🤣 1y
sarahbarnes Great review! I‘m definitely curious about this one and this kind of makes me want to check it out. 1y
squirrelbrain Great review! I can get this from the library system but need to order it in to my local library. I may wait for the shortlist as I have waaay too many books to read right now! 🤦‍♀️ 1y
Ruthiella I was interested is this even prior to the TOB. I am drawn to the female version of the WMFU novel. Not sure what this says about me? 😂 1y
Hooked_on_books The first sentence, eh? 😂 I‘ll give this a try if it makes the tourney, but I‘m not drawn to it otherwise. Glad you enjoyed it! 1y
Megabooks Great review! I think this is only on my radar if it makes the shortlist, but I really appreciate you giving it a go for all of us. 👍🏻👍🏻 1y
