James Merrill
James Merrill: Life and Art | Langdon Hammer
8 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
Langdon Hammer has given us the first biography of the poet James Merrill (192695), whose life is surely one of the most fascinating in American literature. Merrill was born to high privilege and high expectations as the son of Charles Merrill, the charismatic cofounder of the brokerage firm Merrill Lynch, and Hellen Ingram, a muse, ally, and antagonist throughout her sons life. Wounded by his parents bitter divorce, he was the child of a broken home, looking for repair in poetry and love. This is the story of a young man escaping, yet also reenacting, the energies and obsessions of those powerful parents. It is the story of a gay man inventing his identity against the grain of American society during the eras of the closet, gay liberation, and AIDS. Above all, it is the story of a brilliantly gifted, fiercely dedicated poet working every day to turn his life into art. After college at Amherst and a period of adventure in Europe, Merrill returned to the New York art world of the 1950s (he was friendly with W. H. Auden, Maya Deren, Truman Capote, Larry Rivers, Elizabeth Bishop, and other midcentury luminaries) and began publishing poems, plays, and novels. In 1953, he fell in love with an aspiring writer, David Jackson. They explored boys and bars as they made their life together in Connecticut and later in Greece and Key West. At the same time, improbably, they carried on a forty-year conversation with spirits of the Other World by means of a Ouija board. The board became a source of poetic inspiration for Merrill, culminating in his prizewinning, uncanny, one-of-a-kind work The Changing Light at Sandover. In his virtuosic poetry and in the candid letters and diaries that enrich every page of this deliciously readable life, Merrill created a prismatic art of multiple perspectives and comic self-knowledge, expressing hope for a world threatened by nuclear war and environmental catastrophe. Holding this life and art together in a complex, evolving whole, Hammer illuminates Merrill's chronicles of love & loss and the poignant personal journey they record.

I dutifully cut out all the "imporessive" reviews & folded them inside the book flaps. I'd read just enough of JM's poetry to know I'd like to learn more before tackling his great long poem-- Sandover. Five months later, my interest has waned & I'd have been much better off reading his spicy memoir. This book is largely an explication of his complete oeuvre. Great scholarship, but I don't like my joy of discovering poetry ruined by mechanics.

Hobbinol AND as you can see, this book is not without errors. It really could have used a careful editor. But they were probably like me: Not only did my mind wander, but as they say, it walked off completely at times! Still... I'm happy I finished it... I guess. (edited) 7y

Yea! I finally get a reading day tomorrow! Maybe I'll even finish this whale of a biography... I only plan to leave the house once for a long walk to take care of a cousin-in-law's cat. I can't wait.

Suet624 I'm so happy for you. Enjoy. 7y

ValerieAndBooks How was your reading day? Hope it was relaxing and all you dreamed it to be 😊! 7y
Hobbinol @ValerieAndBooks My reading day was sweet, but too short (of course). All this unseasonably warm weather has really brought in houseguests from colder climates and that has definitely set me back. So I was really happy to finish 2 books and get a running start into two others. Thanks for asking! 7y

Just read this letter of James Merrill to his partner, David Jackson:

"Maybe it's age, but I don't imagine I shall ever again try to imagine a life lived with anyone but you-- together or apart-- and so, yes, if you want me, I'm your Valentine for another 20 years at least."

While staying in his parent's house one winter, James Merrill has a dream of his childhood: "But as I leave my parents' bedroom I follow the brownish spatterings along the hall walls of my old tears shed over a book & I begin to weep again. At the foot of the staircase stands Emma, black, young, strong, who puts down her mop & folds me in her arms. Only a book, I keep telling her through my sobs."

Um... I...uh...started this book in October. It is a VERY #slowread --over 800 pages running approximately 500 packed words per page. I'm truly fascinated by the subject matter, but I have a stylistic problem with the biographer who refers to James Merrill as James or Jimmy, Jim or JM, & Merrill. There are as many variations for anyone else in this book and it makes it seem like James had by far more lovers than he really did. I'm so confused!😶

LeahBergen 😂😂 7y
SusanInTiburon That's the same problem I had starting War and Peace! 😂 7y
Hobbinol @SusanInTiburon Argh! Books are so much better when you can tell what's going on! 7y

"The white clothes Charlie favored and that Hellen dressed her son in, fashionable in the 1920s and 1930s, conveyed a message about class: they were summer garb whose wearers could afford to keep them clean and had the leisure of a contrasting tan, even in winter. Like the big white house in Southampton, however, the style also conveyed a message about racial identity, reinforced by the discreet presence of those black servants..." #readjanuary

saresmoore I live in (West) Palm Beach and the one percenters still wear quite a bit of white here. Did I mention one of Donald Trump's main "houses" is on the island of Palm Beach, too? ? 7y
Hobbinol No, you didn't mention it before that I 'm aware of, but your omission on that count is totally understandable! 😉I bet it makes for some interesting people-watching there in PB! @saresmoore (edited) 7y

I've chosen my cat's favorite snack for today's prompt, #bookandyourfavesnack. If he doesn't get his snack before I start reading, he starts in with the passive-aggressive maneuvers like knocking things over or licking anything that crinkles. He'll do just about anything for a snack. My partner taught him to kiss on the lips in order to get his treat. He's puckering up here... gotta go!
