Stormy Weather
Stormy Weather | Carl Hiaasen

When a ferocious hurricane rips through southern Florida, the con artists and carpetbaggers waste no time in swarming over the disaster area. Among the predators are Edie Marsh, an entrepreneurial young woman whose scheme to sleep with a Palm Beach Kennedy has fizzled, freezing her to concoct a colossal insurance rip-off; Lester Maddox Parsons, a murderous ex-con whose violent encounter with a game warden has left him with the fitting name of Snapper; and Avila, a crooked building inspector-turned-roofer who dabbles somewhat unsuccessfully in the occult. Caught in the middle are Max and Bonnie Lamb, newlyweds torn in wildly different directions by the storm. It is Maxs fateful decision to abort their Disney World honeymoon and race to Dade County to see the terrible devastation. Armed with a video camera, the ambitious young advertising executive cant wait to show his hurricane tapes to his buddies back in New York. Over Bonnies objections, Max eagerly sets out through the rubble, debris and mayhemand promptly vanishes. The only clue to his whereabouts: a runaway monkey. The only person who can help Bonnies search: a mysterious young man with a tranquilizer gun and a roomful of human skulls. But theres also a man called Skink who has devoted his very strange existence to saving Florida from the kinds of people blown in by the hurricane. It is he, crazed and determined, who prowls the swath of the storm and forever changes the lives of Max, Bonnie, Edie and the others. Their pathstangled before they even know itcome together in a novel that continues the hilarious and scathing muckraking tradition that Carl Hiaasen has so mercilessly made his own. In Stormy Weather, there is no calm eye. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Carl Hiaasen's Bad Monkey.

Read my first Hiaasen on first trip to Florida. Perfect combo for me. Published in 1995. Racial, gender stereotypes, some language haven't weathered well (tho true to novel's characters). Otherwise, loved it, novel was constant laughs. Set in aftermath of a hurricane, highlighting the rainbow of lowlifes making money from all the heartbreak & loss.

SamAnne Loved Skink & his hatred for developers & all who got rich over the destruction of Florida's natural wealth and beauty. Was grateful on my trip to see Everglades, Cypress swamps, small protected natural areas that give a sense of what was! 1y

Can‘t see the 6 inches of snow on the ground! Headed to the airport, leaving the colder northern climate for the Florida Keys! Stocked up on Carl Hiaasen books.

SamAnne This copy is battered and duct taped. Friend gave it to me. He picked it up in a free library in Baja. It‘s a traveling paperback! 1y
CarolynM Enjoy your trip💕 1y
Reggie Yes, have some fun in the sun. And laugh, Hiassen‘s good for that. 1y

🌬 Love the tagged book!
🌠 The Little Prince. He's easily one of my favorite travelers!
🤔 I don't really categorize food by season but I guess a really big salad with lots of fresh veggies.
📚 My #horrorpost book was the best I read in March. Horrorstör wasn't awful and my husband said the best book I read last month was Ready Player One! 🤣 @Timg138

Thanks, @melyndarae! #weekendchat @CSeydel

The dog always acts weird when it's going to storm and he insisted I come outside too. Luckily Netflix is portable. But I'm getting cold. Lol

A man at church asked if I'd changed my hairstyle. I think it had to do with walking outside😂 #WTForecast

Redwritinghood Sounds like the same kind of hair I have. I would swear it grows when it's humid out. 7y
DebinHawaii Hah! 😂 7y
MicheleinPhilly My wife points out my "humidity halo" all the time. Damn curly hair. 7y

Kicking back on a Saturday reading my book and then it hits, major thunderstorm. Lots of thunder, lots of lightning, and not a lot of power. The power went out. Will be a while before it comes back on because they can't work on it until the rain goes away… Safety first! Time to break out the Kindle.

Redjewel_7734 Love your Kindle cover 😍 (edited) 7y
MaleficentBookDragon I have that cover for my kindle. ❤️it! 7y
LisaJo @Redjewel_7734 @MaleficentBookDragon It took my awhile to select it. I usually go safe - like a place blue or green. I stepped out of my comfort zone on this and have never looked back. 7y

#riotgrams Day 12: #outside
Strong winds and rain tonight.

Donna_sBookMinute Be careful and check the weather and traffic reports before you leave in the morning. 7y
diovival @Donna_sBookMinute Woke up to light snow. Thankfully winds died down and roads clear. We lucked out and no damage in my area. 7y

#setinmycity This is more set in my county/region. I love Hiassen because he skewers South Florida stereotypes so well. It's been a long time since I read this. I think this is the one that includes scenes in sugar cane fields, which start about 5 miles west of where we live. Too bad I don't have a picture of a cane field, but if you haven't seen one, you aren't missing anything. #readJamuary

RealLifeReading Hahaha. Your comment about the cane fields is funny. I've never seen one! 7y

Watching The Weather Channel and on a segment about Hurricane Prep, the newscaster said, "be sure you have a couple of good books and that your Kindle is charged!" Totally a reader ?

Lynnsoprano Well, mine is! And so is my old one for backup😄 With hurricane shutters up the house gets really and dark, and if/when we lose power, I won't have enough light to read if not the Kindle. 8y

I'm stuck in blahville. Definitely doesn't follow a standard formula but very violent--apparently just for the sake of violence.
