The Medici Murders
The Medici Murders | David Hewson
7 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
The first in a brand-new mystery series from the acclaimed author of The Killing and Devils Fjord. Serious history buffs are in for a treat Kirkus Reviews Venice is a city full of secrets. For hundreds of years it has been the scene of scandal, intrigue and murderous rivalries. And it remains so today. 1548, Lorenzino de Medici, himself a murderer and a man few will miss, is assassinated by two hired killers. Today, Marmaduke Godolphin, British TV historian and a man even fewer will miss, is stabbed by a stiletto blade on the exact same spot, his body dropping into the canal. Can the story of the first murder explain the attack on Godolphin? The Carabinieri certainly think so. They recruit retired archivist Arnold Clover to unpick the mystery and to help solve the case. But the conspiracy against Godolphin runs deeper than anyone imagined.

Fiction book for September #readingbracket2023 @chasjjlee

Magpiegem I wasn‘t a huge fan of this one, I felt very underwhelmed at the end despite my high hopes! 1y
jenniferw88 @Magpiegem I did the audio, which definitely helped - I agree, I think I'd have been underwhelmed if I read it in print. It was narrated by Richard Armitage! 1y

Mehso-so

4/23 This book, although well researched, is over written. The author has obviously done a lot of research and wants to make sure we know all about it. Usually I enjoy being drawn in by details but I found my mind wondering during this one. It just couldn‘t keep my interest and by the end I didn‘t really care about the answers to the mystery. 2.5⭐️

Pickpick

This is the first book in a new series by David Hewson set in Venice. The lead character is Arnold Clover, a retired archivist, who has just moved to Venice. He was meant to move there with his wife but unfortunately she suddenly died just before the move, but he felt it was right to continue with their planned dream.

Andrew65 Whilst in Venice he is contacted by Capitano Valentina Fabbri of the Venetian Carabunieri to help out in the murder of a TV personality, who as it happened he was at University with and had contacted him in Venice to investigate some documents he had laid his hands on. The murdered man, Sir Marmaduke Godolphin, doesn‘t come across as the nicest of men and as it happens was murdered at the same location as Lorenzino De Medici was murdered in 1548. 2y
Andrew65 As Arnold carries out his investigation it appears there may be some connections linking the two murders.

This is quite a complex book with plenty of history thrown in and is ideal for those of us that like a historical backdrop to our historical mysteries. This would also be ideal for those who want to find out more about the infamous De Medici family and Michelangelo, who figures prominently in the book and may be connected to events.

Andrew65 It is clear from the way Venice is conveyed and talked about by David Hewson that he loves Venice and this comes across very well. Overall the book makes you want to go to Venice, and savour its unique atmosphere, as well as find out more about the historical connections in the book. 2y

Andrew65 This was a very enjoyable historical mystery, with plenty of history thrown in, but I personally feel, despite the excellent job the narrator did, that it would be better read as a book to give you time to re-read parts and make the most of the story. However I certainly will be reading other books in this series as they are published & will be reading more by David Hewson. Recommended to all that love historical fiction and historical mysteries. 2y
Andrew65 Thanks to the author, publisher and Net Galley for a providing a review copy of this book for an open and honest review. 2y
Bookwomble Great review, and sounds like a fascinating book. Also, with no evidence to back me up, I somehow feel that Venice is a more murdery place than Anglesey 😁 2y
Bluebird Ooooooh! A great historical mystery set in Venice! Stacked! 2y
MonicaLoves2Read Going to have to read. Add to my TBR List 🙂 2y
Andrew65 @Bluebird I‘m sure the stats would support you 🤣 Yet there were more dead bodies in the Anglesey book 🤷 2y
Andrew65 @Bluebird @monica5 Hope you both enjoy it. 2y
