When in Rome
When in Rome: A Novel | Liam Callanan
4 posts | 1 read | 6 to read
From nationally bestselling, award-winning author Liam Callanan, the story of an opportunity to start over at midlife, a chance to save a struggling convent in the Eternal City, and the dramatic re-emergence of an old flame . . . Meet Claire: fifty-two, desperate to do something new and get a fresh start. Enter the chance to go to Rome: Home to a struggling convent facing a precipitous end, the city beckons Claire, who's long had a complicated relationship with religion, including a missed connection with convent life in her teens. Once in Rome, she finds a group of funny, fearless nuns in a gorgeous villa, beautiful runs throughout a color-saturated city, and a chance to reflect. It all leads her to an unexpected questionshould she join the convent?and an answer that startles her as much as it does those closest to her. It also startles Marcus, a once-buzzy actor, devastatingly handsome, who is eternally in love with Claire. Marcus has come and gone from Claires life since college but now reappears in Rome just as shes about to decide whats next. As Claire searches for her higher calling, she finds the key to her future may lay in her pastand involves an actual key. The nuns swear it unlocks nothing, but on a night when choices and voices swirl, Claire finds a long-hidden lock. A look at faith, in oneself as much as a higher power, and love, romantic and familial, lost and found, this is the thoroughly charming story of one woman who sets out to rewrite her past and future, only to be surprised by the plot twists life plants . . . when in Rome.

Light, feel-good, heartwarming. Not my usual reading fare, but a nice change of pace. Made me want to plan a trip to Rome. #NunLit

Indie Bookstore Day #bookhaul Part 2

Forbidden Notebook sounds fantastic. It was originally published in an Italian magazine as a serial novel between December 1950 and June 1951. Death of a Bookseller sounds dark and funny and twisty. And I had to get tagged because it features a group of funny, fearless nuns. J. Courtney Sullivan says it is a total delight. I hope so!

batsy I loved Forbidden Notebook and I've got Death of a Bookseller on my list. Look forward to your thoughts! 12mo

I was doing so good on minimizing my book buying this year, but post vacation blues had me bringing this stack home. Hooked is a #BlameItOnLitsy choice (thanks @swishandflick ), two magazines in prep for a kitchen reno, Oh Reader is a lovely bookish magazine, and the tagged has a lot of elements that draw me (mostly nuns!).

JamieArc @monalyisha I think the tagged is something you would pick up! 13mo
JamieArc @jlhammar The tagged sounds like a fun nun-lit read. 13mo
jlhammar Yes, I actually had that in mind for a possible choice for next year #NunLitQuarterly! But maybe we won't be able to wait that long to read it. Sounds excellent. 13mo
JamieArc @jlhammar I have a feeling When in Rome is one of those books that I want to read RIGHT NOW but won‘t actually get to for a very long time 🤦🏻‍♀️ 13mo
