Wild Woman Swimming
Wild Woman Swimming: A Journal of West Country Waters | Tanya Shadrick, Lynne Roper
7 posts | 1 read | 8 to read
"Devon paramedic Lynne Roper began swimming outdoors in 2011 while recovering from a double mastectomy. Warm, funny and fearless, she was soon at the heart of The Outdoor Swimming Society, inspiring others to swim wild, 'read water' and take educated risks as she did. For five years, until a brain tumour made swimming and writing impossibly hard, Lynne recorded her swims in over sixty wild waters. Editor Tanya Shadrick promised to publish the diaries after a single meeting with the author in the month before she died"--Provided by publisher.

I totally forget what I‘m supposed to use as a hashtag for this. Please hold. 😅

While you‘re waiting, I‘ll admit to you that I dilly-dallied finishing my audiobook in August, dragging it out into September so that it could make an appearance on the bracket later this month. I didn‘t want it to have to compete with Tuck Everlasting! But joke‘s on me because it‘s definitely going to end up competing once it wins Sept. vs. Oct. 🙈 The suspense!

marleed Haha. I so understood this logic an conundrum! 8mo
monalyisha @marleed It was so silly! I was like, “I probably shouldn‘t do this bracket next year.” 😆 8mo

Pickpick

I‘ve been reading Lynn‘s swimming diaries for months (which is the way to do it; slowly, at your leisure). I‘m feeling a bit bereft now that the book won‘t be my constant companion!

Lynn was a wild swimmer who explored the Devon coast. She details her “aquamarine wanderings,” full of every shade of blue, green, gray & copper. She describes Moon Gazey (full moon) swims with friends, followed by thermoses of hot beverages & small cakes. Heaven.👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: She was almost always accompanied by her dog, Honey, who she said “cheated” during their wild, cold water swims “by wearing her fur coat.” Lynn died of a brain tumor in 2016. Author Tanya Shadrick (whom I heard speak on Katherine May‘s podcast) compiled and edited her writings at her behest. Both her vivaciousness and her quiet fill every page. (edited) 9mo

“It‘s evening and the sun is low, flooding Bovisand with light reflected from sea, sky, and wet sand. The inlet glows softly, guarded by dark rocks pointing out to Cornwall like dragon‘s feet.

Occasionally, the growl of a boat engine augments the reptilian grumble and crash of the sea. The breakwater appears to hover in a fairytale cloud. We bob around and leap through waves while gulls float nearby in puddles of light.”

Hi, I just learned about conger eels.

New fear IMMEDIATELY realized. Here‘s a dead one that washed up on a Devon beach. Did I just torture myself further by reading an article about an Irish swimmer who had his face attacked so viciously that he required plastic surgery? I sure did!

batsy 😩 1y
julesG Don't go to the British Isles for a swim. 😜 1y
monalyisha @julesG It sounded so idyllic up ‘til this point! 😩 I also read that the American Conger Eel is all up and down the East Coast…which is where I live and take my summer dips in the ocean. PERFECT. 🙈 1y

julesG I'd love to say: No risk, no fun! But I know that that's no help at all. Are there ways to prevent an attack? Like make certain noises or so? 1y
monalyisha @julesG I‘d have to do a “deep dive” to figure these things out! It won‘t stop me from swimming at home but…I won‘t be taking a running leap into UK waters anytime soon! (edited) 1y
julesG Much too cold anyway. 🥶 1y
monalyisha @julesG I‘ve been reading all about cold water swimming. It‘s something to work towards! 1y
marleed Oh just no! 1y
julesG It's supposed to be very beneficial for your health. Also cold showers and ice-dips/baths. I'd have to build up for it though. 1y

Book club meeting next week (for which I have not read).

One guess as to whether this is my book club book…

ShelleyBooksie How was this one? 1y
monalyisha @ShelleyBooksie I don‘t know! 🙈 I got partway in, realized my step-mother would love it, and gifted it to her before I read any further. My replacement copy is on the way! 😆 1y
