The start of this book was slow and the writing wasn't capturing me. But once this book found it's footing, it was great. I could just hear the music at the house parties. I loved learning a bit about what the people of the Netherlands went through in WWII. The book shows both sides - Dutch resistance and the Dutch NSB. This book could have gone so many ways but I liked the ending, although I did find it a bit drawn out.

Finally starting to feel a bit better...today is my first full day back working after spending the last few days mostly sleeping this bug away. Started reading a bit last night and I'm hoping to get a decent chunk into it tonight. I'm about 50 pages in and nothing has really happened yet, but it's still been an enjoyable read so far. A fellow litten had let me know it was a slow start so I was expecting it.

Texreader Glad you‘re starting to feel better. And stick with the book. It‘ll pick up. 5d
Jess861 @Texreader It definitely did pick up like you said. I got about half way through last night and it started to feel like it was going somewhere. 4d
Texreader @Jess861 I‘m glad it‘s picking up for you. It had some real surprises 4d
Jess861 @Texreader I loved the pharmaceutical side of the book (even though it was small) - I wasn't expecting it. The author could have gone down quite a few different storylines with that if she had wanted. (edited) 3d
Texreader @Jess861 I know! I agree. That is quite the untold story of the war. 3d

Two sisters marry medical school buddies, one now a zoo veterinarian and the other a pharmacist. When the Nazis invade the #Netherlands the buddies take opposing sides and the sisters find themselves growing ever distant. Joanna joins the Resistance finding ways to help the Jews survive, while her sister-opposing the occupation—hopes merely to get through the hardships with the perks her husband gets from the Germans. When Joanna takes a ⬇️

While in prison, Joanna‘s sister finally takes her own bold actions. This book shows how families were ripped apart, and how badly the Jewish population suffered and died in record numbers during the Holocaust. It touches on so many details of the war, like the German soldiers addiction to drugs, the nurseries with Jewish ⬇️ 2w

Last weekend my sister and I went to this small art gallery where the owner makes art out of found items, including this clog. This week, reading this book there was a reference to wooden Dutch clogs and I thought of this photo I took. Seems perfect for #Netherlands #foodandlit @Catsandbooks

Also from the author‘s historical note at the end of the book. The author is Canadian and lives in Amsterdam.

Tonight I planned to eat a sausage sandwich. Then I read a post by @Jess861 and found a recipe for broodje rookworst: https://www.thespruceeats.com/broodje-rookworst-recipe-3863040

I didn‘t have all the ingredients but I had enough to come really close. I doctored up my sauerkraut per the recipe, put mayo and Norwegian mustard (the closest I have to grainy mustard) on the sausage bread and tadaa!! #foodandlit #Netherlands Different but very good

TheKidUpstairs Yum! Looks so good :) 2w
Daisey I haven‘t decided on any recipes to try for this month yet, but this looks like something I could get reasonably close to with what I have in my kitchen. I‘ll see what I can come up with this weekend. Thanks for sharing. 2w
Jess861 That looks delicious!! That is the recipe I have bookmarked to try and now my stomach is rumbling and I cannot wait to try it! (edited) 2w

I am hoping to start reading The Dutch Orphan this weekend while I eat my first Broodje Rookworst. I need to go into the city to buy the rookworst, so I'm not sure if I'll pick up ingredients this weekend or the next but I'm so excited to try this sandwich. I love sauerkraut and to mix it with a sausage on a sandwich - yummm!

Aims42 That sandwich picture looks delicious!! Yum!!! Good luck with your ingredient quest! 🤞 2w
Jess861 @Aims42 Thanks! There is a Dutch grocery store in the city - it's just finding the time to go there 😊. 2w

Texreader Oooh I‘m having a sausage sandwich tonight. I could add some sauerkraut (which I keep on hand because yum) and I‘m in business! I think that‘s what I‘ll do! Oh and I‘m almost finished with the book. It starts kind of slow but is really good. 2w
Jess861 @Texreader Good to know it's a good read with it starting slow. You'll have to let me know how the sauerkraut on the sandwich is if you try it!! 2w

#BookSpin and #DoubleSpin picks for the month of January. Not sure I'll get to the DoubleSpin this month as I have probably bit off more than I can chew in the number of books I'm trying to read - but you never know! My BookSpin is also the book I'm reading for #FoodAndLit

@TheAromaofBooks @Catsandbooks @Texreader

TheAromaofBooks Yay!!! Enjoy!! And your spins “count“ if you read them any time this year, so you can keep it on reserve for future months 😁 4w

FULL REVIEW 4/20

Two sisters on two different sides.

Johanna was married to a resistor and Liesbeth was married to a man supporting Hitler.

They always have been close, but this war separated them.

Don‘t miss this marvelous book.
