Has she been sent to save the realm or destroy it? As Spymaster to the Queen, Aya's blood oath ensures she protects those she fights alongside - including Will, the Queen's Enforcer and Aya's bitter rival. When rumors of dark magic rise in a nearby kingdom, both are sent to investigate. But when Aya's power acts beyond her gods-given affinity, she risks being turned into a weapon in a war she doesn't know how to win. And when her relationship with Will unexpectedly shifts, neither know the danger that will follow . . .

The writing style is interesting but I didn‘t love the characters. Too much YA angst? IDK. There‘s a lot going on but nothing happening? I like the contemporary speech a lot but then a bunch of dated speech & I‘m zoning out. Enemies to lovers with spice. Not complaining. I‘d listen to a sequel. I‘m just not sure if I‘ll remember any of the characters except Aya & Will. I look forward to a sequel when I‘m more in the mood for YA Ronantasy.

This first in a fantasy trilogy started off slow for me, and there were a lot of names/terms to keep straight, but I ended up enjoying it. In its simplest terms, it‘s about a world where some are blessed with a kernel of godlike powers. However some are obsessed with the darkest form of this power and want more…to be gods themselves. Aya, as spymaster to a queen, works to enforce the mandates of the gods…keep powers in check and protect humans. 🔻

robinb However as her own affinity grows, she finds herself straddling the light/dark within herself. There‘s treachery, greed, intrigue and a whole host of other things going on here as well as an enemies/lovers slow-burn romance. While not perfect, as a debut it‘s well done, especially pertaining to character development. I‘ll be looking forward to the next in series. 4.25/5⭐️ 6mo

The Curse of Saints

What a chonker! Adult FairyLoot - May 2023.

This is a pretty signed edition with slightly rose gold foiling on the spine & front/back covers. It has ombré sprayed edges & different end papers in front/back. Oddly another jacket that‘s … not super appealing?

I‘ve never heard of this book. I meant to skip it.

Tossed on Mount TBR. ?

SpeculativeFemale Oh, I like the look and the sound of that one... 11mo

Fairyloot was on top of their game this month and I actually received the May book in May. It did come with an illustrated cover that I'm not loving. I am loving it without the cover, though, and the ombre sprayed edges.
