For my Topics bookclub we are reading “Cryptids” in September, and this was available on audio from my library. I enjoyed it more than I expected to.
Noah is 12 and trans and in deep grief over loss of his best friend Lewis. Lewis loved the legend of Mothman, so Noah starts writing to the Cryptids and leaving the letter notebook outdoors overnight. Someone seems to be reading the letters, but who?
Noah navigates school, new friends, bullies.
Lovely. Explorations of grief and identity; perspective of trans, queer and autistic experience from an own voices author. Cryptid metaphor regarding othering of queer and transgender people accessibly conveyed for middle grade readers. Sketchy art style of Rebecca Harry's illustrations have such a life and sweetness to them. 1/3
Tricky angle to get with the library tape holding the dust jacket on, but it's important to me that you know there is a lavender foil Mothman on the hardcover of this book. 🤩
I too, would like to attend forest school with Mothman.
I read this back in March for #TransRightsReadathon and really enjoyed it. Naturally, I didn't read the description before diving into what I thought would be a fluffy book, so I was blindsided by the intense portrayal of childhood grief. I loved the exploration of identity and friendship, as well as exploring social life on the autism spectrum. I didn't realize it was a novel in verse because I listened to the audiobook. #LGBTQIA
The reasons I struggled to connect with this book were all mine. It‘s not the usual POV I go for and the struggles were nearly all internal which makes the story lag for me. But I was fascinated with Mothman and how Noah used him to process his grief for his friend.
Guess I decided to cry at work today (but also if you have 2023 MG recommendations in wake of no MG category let me know!)

Such a cute yet heartbreaking story🥺❤️
The search for Mothman after the death of Noah‘s best friend. His growth is huge through his letters to Mothman. Coming into his own❤️
LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent representation❤️
Told in verse, a young trans boy deals with the tragic death of his best friend as he writes letters to the cryptid, Mothman. Poetic and emotionally moving, this middle grade book explores identity, death, healing, and wonder in this coming of age story.
