The Conference of the Birds | Peter Sis
14 posts | 16 read | 8 to read
An award-winning author and illustrator offers a beautiful and uplifting adaptation of the beloved Sufi poem Celebrated childrens book creator Peter Sis presents his first book for adults with The Conference of the Birdsa lyrical and richly illustrated story of love, faith, and the beauty of the human journey. Siss deeply felt version of the classic twelfth-century Persian epic poem tells the story of a flock of birds in search of the true king, Simorgh, who lives on the mountain of Kaf. Drawn from all species, the flock travels through the seven valleys: quest, love, understanding, detachment, unity, amazement, and death. The birds that endure reach the mountain to learn a profound lesson: that Simorgh the king is, in fact, each of them and all of them.

This “picture book for adults” is Peter Sís‘ adaptation of 13th century Persian poem by Farid Us-Din Attar. Mystical and philosophical search for answers only to realize they lie within. But not until a long journey comes to an end. I am very curious about the full text of the poem. The art is absolutely beautiful.

@CounterfeitNickel and I did a dinner + used bookstore date last night and picked up this beautiful book, then read it together last night. The illustrations are gorgeous, the pages are thick and textured, and the story (a take on a 12th c. Persian epic) magical and weird. Glad we bumped into this! I'd like the read the translated original next. Off to a good start with my #BFC21 goal of reading for fun and my #Scarathlon #TeamSlaughter reading!

#MusicalNewYear Day 11: For #FeedTheBirds, here is an illustrated version of Persian poet, Farid Ud-Din Attar‘s poem. In this epic poem, Attar imagined himself transformed into a hoopoe bird, holding a conference with all the other birds in the universe to seek answers to life‘s most important questions from “a king who has all the answers.” My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-j0A

I had never heard of this poem and found this book by happy accident in the art section of the book store. I read it in one sitting and I KNOW I'm going to be going through it and reading it again

This is one of the most beautiful books I own, inside and out. It is an adaptation of the epic poem by the same name by Farid Ud-Din Attar. The materials used in the first edition are particularly stunning (I've attempted to capture it up close). I return to it often for its message; I've only read parts of the original, but I look forward to hopefully reading it in full this year as part of #ReadHarder. #somethingpretty #riotgrams
