So much fun! It‘s 1930s Mississippi and magic is widely known, but Black people are forbidden from having or using it. Two Black and Choctaw girls, one of whom is Deaf, need money to pay for a magic license. Their cousin suggests they join illegal broom races. Brooms has a wide variety of representation of all kinds and a great, exciting story. I also liked the simple but expressive art style. Thanks, @Kenyazero for inspiring me to get this!

This presents a reimagining of historically marginalized experiences by bringing magic into the mix. Similarly to LGBTQIA+ gatherings being broken up by policing forces, the magic users in this book run secret broom races, hidden from the persecuting eye of the law. Not gonna lie, I was worried there for a while! This book kept the tension, but it was also chock full of tender moments, embracing diversity, potential, and protective power. The final race had me cheering, the ending had me happy crying. The magic elements were wound so effortlessly into the story the author and artist wanted to tell. Highly recommend. Do NOT miss the scrap book moments at the end, tucked after the important creator's notes.

Set in an alternate 1930s Mississippi where lots of people have magic but African Americans are forbidden from using it, this uplifting graphic novel shows the power of friendship and community against oppression. The six central young women are nonwhite as well as queer, and/or deaf, and/or suffer debilitating joint pain—and they all have positive outcomes. I like the way Jasmine Walls includes untranslated Chinese dialogue, while allowing readers like me to understand the gist of what was said based on the English reply.

This had me at “a queer, witchy Fast & the Furious” and kept me with amazing characters, standing up for what‘s right, and fascinating magic! ❤️

I loved this graphic novel! I liked the art style and loved the characters. I‘m a little bit confused on the relation between Luella, Mattie and Emma. The story takes place on an alternate timeline where it‘s illegal for Black witches to use the magic. The characters still compete in secret broom racing competitions. 5🌟

A group of girls and women in 1930s Mississippi participate in illegal broom races despite the risks because it's one of the only places they can safely be themselves and perform magic. It's like a fantasy version of A League of Their Own. I'm obsessed.
