A Wreath for Emmett Till
A Wreath for Emmett Till | Marilyn Nelson
8 posts | 10 read | 13 to read
A Coretta Scott King and Printz honor book now in paperback. A Wreath for Emmett Till is "A moving elegy," says The Bulletin. In 1955 people all over the United States knew that Emmett Louis Till was a fourteen-year-old African American boy lynched for supposedly whistling at a white woman in Mississippi. The brutality of his murder, the open-casket funeral held by his mother, Mamie Till Mobley, and the acquittal of the men tried for the crime drew wide media attention. In a profound and chilling poem, award-winning poet Marilyn Nelson reminds us of the boy whose fate helped spark the civil rights movement.

Powerful collection of Petrarchan sonnets. The wreath is created because the last line of a poem turns into the first line of the next poem. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What a perfect way to describe the United States! #poetry

One mouth speaks with forked tongue, the other reads
the Constitution.”

Just wow. Please read this powerful poem.

MynameisSnow You should read Gathering Of Waters, which is historical fiction and includes weaving in of Emmett‘s tragic story. It‘s a fantastic book. One of my favs. 4y
megnews @MynameisSnow I read that in 2016. Gave it 5 stars! 4y

#HollyJollyReading Day 26: The entire book is written as a “heroic crown of sonnets,” a #wreath - in iambic pentameter with a Petrarchan rhyme scheme. This must be one of the most powerful books I have read. It reminded me how poetry is able to distill pain – providing a way through which broken spirits can be transformed into something that resembles wholeness and light. My review of this intense book: https://wp.me/pDlzr-6ba

Brilliant. A heroic crown of sonnets (which the author thankfully defines in the introduction) that is masterfully crafted. Lyrical and unforced, I am stunned at her ability to use this structured form to so seamlessly create a beautiful, emotional tribute to Emmett Till. I read it, and then read the author's notes on each one, and reread it. Skillful and profound.

Krisjericho The art is perfect and matches the text flawlessly. The notes of the artist were a wonderful addition. 8y

After seeing @BookishMarginalia 's post and reading the linked article, I felt a need to share this title.

Written in the form of a heroic crown of sonnets, this is a tribute to Emmett Till and my introduction to what happened to him.
