Sharp and propulsive, The Damages is an engrossing novel set in motion by the disappearance of a student during an ice storm, and explores themes of memory, trauma, friendship, and identity. What I remember best about that week in January is trying to keep track of all the lies I told. 1997: For Ros, starting university at Regis is an opportunity for reinventiona chance to be seen as interesting, to be accepted by the in-crowd, and maybe even get a boyfriend. But when she meets her roommate, Megan, with her pleated jeans and horse-print bedding, she sees her as a social liability. Outside of their dorm room, Ros distances herself from Megan and quickly befriends the cool kids, seeking status at all costs. Just after winter break, an intense ice storm hits campus, triggering a reckless, days-long dorm party, during which Megan goes missing. Ros is blamed for the incident and abruptly dropped by her social circle, casting a shadow over the next two decades of her life. 2020: Ross former partner, Lukas, the father of her eleven-year-old son, is accused of a sexual assault. The accusation brings new details of an old story to light, forcing Ros to revisit a dark moment from her past. Ros must take a hard look not only at the father of her child, but also at her own mistakes, her own trauma, and at the supposed liberal period she grew up in. The Damages is a page-turning, thought-provoking novel about the lies we tell other people and the lies we tell ourselves.

Sunday morning reading. Halfway, there‘s a lot of the main character ! I know she is the MC , but still .. I‘m curious to see what happens though. Parts are really good , and other parts are YA ish and not as engaging.

JillR Funnily enough I saw this one in a bookshop yesterday, picked it up, put it down, did that a couple more times then left it (really liked the sound of it, was trying to show restraint!) 4d
Cathythoughts @JillR I‘m still reading it this morning… it‘s very good in parts. Restraint is a tough one 😁 4d
TrishB Sounds interesting 👍🏻 4d

squirrelbrain It changes quite a lot at the halfway point! 4d
sarahbarnes This sounds very interesting - I‘ll see what your final take on it is when you finish it. 😊 4d
Cathythoughts @TrishB It‘s good, I‘m on the fence though. ❤️ 3d
Cathythoughts @squirrelbrain Yes I‘m in second half now … different 👍🏻 3d
Cathythoughts @sarahbarnes I‘m putting it on pause ( never a good sign 😬) while I take up my bookclub book. 3d

I love a campus novel so wanted to read this - in fact, the later story was the better half, I thought.

In 1998 Ros‘s Regis uni roommate Megan goes missing in a terrible snowstorm and Ros is blamed for not looking after her.

Over 20 years later Ros‘s former partner is accused during the #metoo movement, leading Ros to look back on her life as a teenager, the mistakes she made and the lies we tell ourselves.

TheKidUpstairs Interesting, because I liked the first half of this one better than the second. I remember finding the pacing, especially to be a bit of a pretty down. but "Regis University" is so very clearly based on the university I attended, so I think that recognition factor was a big part of what drew me in to that first part 1w
Cathythoughts Sounds good. I‘m going to try it ❤️ 1w
squirrelbrain I wondered if it was a ‘real‘ university @TheKidUpstairs but hadn‘t got round to looking it up! 😊 1w

Mehso-so

I raced through the first part, but the second part got repetitive. I think it could have been edited down for a more focused read.

1. Megan is derived from my Margaret, which was my grandmother's name.

2. One of my current reads (tagged) has a character named Megan, and I'm also reading Ordinary Human Failings by Megan Nolan, so Megan's abound in my reading world at the moment!

My #WeekendReads

The Damages - Scott is an alumni of the same university I attended, and this book's Regis University is a VERY thinly veiled stand-in!

Ordinary Human Failings - completely engrossed, fabulous audio narration, my heart is in my throat, and I can't turn away.

River East, River West - So far, so good, but overshadowed by my other reads. I like the choice to contrast Alva's story with her Lu Fang's.

TheKidUpstairs The Postcard - everyone's reviews convinced me! Picked it up this evening and immediately devoured 50 pages. 1y

squirrelbrain I‘m going to start River East soon…think I might try Restless Dolly Maunder first as it‘s quite short! 🤪 1y

This would be a great choice for a book club as I was left wanting to discuss so much about the issues raised in this novel. Set in two timelines, 1997-98 at a university and 2020 during the pandemic, the story deals with self image, friendship, trauma and consent. I enjoyed following the main character's growth from a self absorbed older teen to a slightly wiser, more aware mother, friend and daughter and felt the ending was realistic. 4/5 stars
