Thoughts on the #WomensPrize Shortlist?

I didn't read the whole Longlist, but I'm surprised at Restless Dolly Maunder being here. It was a good read, but nothing superb. I would have liked to see Ordinary Human Failings. And from reviews I've read, In Defense of the Act seemed to be a stand out.

@BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain

sarahbarnes I‘m reading OHF right now and agree it‘s very good. 10h
squirrelbrain Yes, I‘m really disappointed that Defence isn‘t there. And a bit confused about Dolly. It was….. OK. 🤷‍♀️ 9h
Deblovestoread Super disappointed about Defence and OHF both. I enjoyed Dolly but am surprised it made the list, too. 6h

ChaoticMissAdventures Wow. So disappointing. I agree with @squirrelbrain and @Deblovestoread Dolly is such a strange pick. It was Fine but not near as good as others. I am actually annoyed that Defence is not here. 6h
ChaoticMissAdventures And OHF. What weird picks. 6h
BarbaraBB I haven‘t read Dolly yet but I thibk Defence was so much better than The Wren 6h

I suppose four of six I'd liked/wanted isn't bad?

The Enright and Grenville are good reads but not my favourites of their work - wondered if they were carried by their other books / body of work rather than this book? IDK 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

#womensprize #shortlist #nopleasingsomepeople

Leniverse Yes, I wonder the same. But honestly, that might be reason to longlist them, but not shortlist. I'm baffled. Especially about Dolly. 15h
TheKidUpstairs @Leniverse Dolly Maunder was a surprise for me, too. It was a good read, but nothing special. Definitely not Shortlist material! 11h
charl08 @Leniverse exactly! @TheKidUpstairs I'm not alone 😀 11h

charl08 I'm rubbish at remembering to tag! @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain 11h
squirrelbrain Yes, I had 4 of the 6 as well. And I‘m surprised about Dolly. I pretty much expected the Enright to be there though 9h
AnneCecilie I haven‘t read any Grenville before and find that Dolly is growing on me and is a book I keep thinking about 6h
ChaoticMissAdventures The Wren was the first I read of these and I cannot tell you what it was about. It had so little impact on me I cannot remember a thing. 6h
BarbaraBB 4 out of 6 is good but my two favorites are missing though! I still need to read Dolly! 6h

My top six #WomensPrize2024 fiction books (in random order because I have trouble choosing between them). I think maybe The Wren The Wren will get shortlisted, but the question is will we get a triple Irish? I think no, and went with the other two.

#WomensPrize

BarbaraBB Great choices. I haven‘t finished And Then yet so haven‘t added that to my shortlist. Instead of it I have River. The others are the same! 1d
Leniverse @BarbaraBB That's one of the two I haven't read yet. Your picks are the same as @squirrelbrain then! 1d

Here‘s my #womensprize shortlist, in approx order, although I can‘t choose between the first two.

I have to say I‘m slightly disappointed in the longlist this year. Usually there are at least 5 / 6 books that would make it onto my personal favourites list for that year - this year only 2. (Defence and Brotherless Night)

I‘m not a completist, as I bailed on The Blue Beautiful World, which means it will make the shortlist, along with Hangman! 🤣

Leniverse Nice! Will finish Enter Ghost today and then do a shortlist, although there's two I haven't had the time to read yet 😬😮‍💨 😩 River East is one of them. 2d
Deblovestoread Our top two will be the same. Hoping to read Soldier Sailor before Wednesday. I‘ll be posting my short list tomorrow but will not have read them all. 2d
charl08 Great! So interesting to see the overlaps. 2d

ChaoticMissAdventures Very similar to my list! I would not doubt it about Hangman on the shortlist I went back to remember what made the shortlist last year remembered most of us hated this one but it for some reason made it 2d
jlhammar Oh fun, love seeing your personal shortlist. I‘m hoping Brotherless Night and Ordinary Human Failings make it. Hoping to start Enter Ghost soon. 2d
BarbaraBB Mine is almost the same. I‘ll post tomorrow. Oh and I guess this one will be in the official shortlist too 2d
Hooked_on_books Mine will be pretty similar to yours, thought my clear winner is BN thus far. And I can‘t read Soldier Sailor until June, as that‘s when it comes out here. But I‘ll have 13 read before the shortlist announcement. Not bad! 2d
AnneCecilie I also have Brotherless Night, Ordinary Human Failings and Soldier Sailor on my list of books I would love to see on the shortlist. And since I don‘t see the fuss about Western Lane, but it seems to be a judge favorite, I‘m sure it‘ll make the shortlist 2d
squirrelbrain Pretty good Holly! And it‘s not your fault if they don‘t come out in time. (Sorry I forgot to tag you! 😳) 2d
squirrelbrain I don‘t see the fuss about Western Lane either @AnneCecilie - so, we‘ve nearly guessed at the whole *actual* shortlist, the ones we don‘t want to be on there! 2d
squirrelbrain @ChaoticMissAdventures - Pod was the last book I truly hate-read. In a way it was good- it taught me that I really ought to bail sometimes! 2d
AnneCecilie It tend to be that way. But there‘s always a first time for everything 😊 2d
Cathythoughts I have your two personal favourites stacked 👍🏻❤️ 2d
LeeRHarry I‘m hoping I‘ll have some time to read more of the shortlist once it‘s announced as I haven‘t got very far with the longlist. Will see how you go when I watch the announcement- for once it is at a decent hour for us over here. 😊 1d

Pickpick

This is one of those books that you feel you can‘t say you loved, because of the subject matter (suicide). But I did love it.

It‘s very dark but also darkly humorous in places. Looking back on it now I can also see a sense of hope there too.

I can‘t wait to what this author writes next.

#womensprize

slategreyskies There‘s a part of me that wants to read this, but there‘s another part of me that thinks maybe it would hit too close to home and be a dangerous read for me. It does look really good, though. 💕 2d
squirrelbrain I‘d hate to recommend it @slategreyskies if you think you would find it tough, but it is strangely positive. Check out @leniverse ‘s review today too. 2d
TrishB I‘ve ordered this one due to everyone‘s reviews 👍🏻 2d
BarbaraBB Great review Helen. Glad you felt the same as I did about it. 2d

Surprisingly funny and entertaining for a book that's also pretty sad. Also very life-affirming for a story that deals with suicide, eating disorders, domestic abuse, depression, generational trauma and more in a completely non-moralising way.

BarbaraBB Great review. My favorite from the longlist 2d
Leniverse @BarbaraBB Not my favourite, but in my personal shortlist I think. Maybe top 3 even. But I also have a couple of books left 😅 2d

Pickpick

This book stressed me out so much I had to take breaks to calm down. I teared up towards the end, and there were times throughout that scared me more than any other book outside the horror/thriller genre. Absolutely superb. Highly recommend.
A book about grief, identity, mental health, addiction, family, motherhood, indigenous heritage, racism, storytelling, choices, and so much more.

TrishB It‘s on the pile to get to. Great review Leni 👍🏻 3d
batsy If I didn't already have it stacked I would have after this review! 3d

#Bookmail! I‘ve been very good about not acquiring new physical books lately, but some just need to be bought! The chunkster is for my Women‘s Prize for NF reading and the Nelson and Rushdie are 2 of my most anticipated books of the year. And I‘d like to pause and note how impactful the Rushdie cover is. The first time I saw it, I gasped. Outstanding cover design!

TheBookHippie I want that Rushdie quite badly… I think I may need to buy it. 4d
squirrelbrain Oooh, great haul! I haven‘t got very far with Shadows yet, as I got distracted with all of the other #womensprize books. And I agree with you about the Knife cover. 4d

squirrelbrain I think we have 3 the same, although I have 1 and a bit to go. 7d
BarbaraBB Interesting! I‘ll share mine with you too but hope some more to finish before next week. I am now reading and enjoying River but I bailed on The Wren, the Wren. I just didn‘t get it. 6d

charl08 @squirrelbrain I'm of course now wondering which 3 😁 6d
charl08 @BarbaraBB I'm hopeful I'll finish the tagged but not sure I'll manage anymore. Looking forward to hearing about what everyone picks! 6d
squirrelbrain Of course you are - that‘s why I didn‘t tell you! 🤣 At the moment, Soldier Sailor, River East and Enter Ghost. (edited) 6d
