Glossy: Ambition, Beauty, and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss's Glossier | Marisa Meltzer
7 posts | 7 read | 2 to read
The bombshell expos that revealsfor the first timeexactly what happened at Glossier, one of Americas hottest and most consequential startups, and dives deep into the enigmatic, visionary woman responsible for it all. Called one of the most disruptive brands in beauty by Forbes, Glossier revolutionized the beauty industry with its sophisticated branding and unique approach to influencer marketing, almost-instantly making the company a juggernaut with rabid fans lining up for a chance to buy its coveted products. It also taught a generation of business leaders how to talk to Millennial and Gen Z customers and build a cult following online. At the center of the story lies Emily Weiss, the elusive former Teen Vogue superintern on the reality show The Hills turned Into the Gloss beauty blogger who had the vision, guts, and searing ambition needed to launch Glossier. She cannily turned every experience, every meeting into an opportunity to fuel her own personal success. Together with her expensive, signature style and singular vision for the future of consumerism, she could not be stopped. Just how did a girl from suburban Connecticut with no real job experience work her way into the bathrooms and boudoirs of the most influential names in the world and build that access into a 1.9-billion-dollar business? Is she solely responsible for its success? And why, eight years later, at the height of Glossier mania, did she step down? In Glossy, journalist and author Marisa Meltzer combines in-depth interviews with former Glossier employees, investors, and Weiss herself to bring you inside the walls of this fascinating and secretive company. From fundraising to product launches and unconventional hiring practices, Meltzer exposes the inner workings of Glossiers culture, culminating in the story of Weiss herself. The Devil Wears Prada for the Bad Blood generation, Glossy is a gripping portrait of not just one of the most important business leaders of her generation, but also a chronicle of an era.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Grabbed this immediately after the author‘s appearance on “Sounds Like a Cult,” a podcast hosted by author / linguist Amanda Montell (highly recommend). Then I placed my first Glossier order as a 42-year-old woman because, why not? Journalist, and Glossier fangirl, Marisa Meltzer tells us the story of enigmatic Emily Weiss, her revolutionary beauty brand, its gen z cult following, and of course, Millennial Pink.

Sace I‘ve heard of that podcast but haven‘t listened since probably 2021. Thanks for reminding me about it. I‘ve never heard of Glossier but I will be checking this out! 6mo
Kitta My ex made us line up for Glossier when it first came to NYC haha. Sounds like an interesting read! 6mo
britt_brooke @Sace I listen regularly, but some topics are definitely more interesting than others. 6mo

britt_brooke @Kitta 😂 That was definitely mentioned in the book! 6mo
Sace @britt_brooke I‘ve been listening to the episode about teaching today. 😱 6mo
britt_brooke @Sace Ha! Yes, I listened to that one. It‘s wild once she starts going through the “culty” aspects of every day things. 6mo

The focus really shifted back and forth between glossier and Weiss, but still- an interesting female ceo story, that could have been a long article.

An interesting commentary on the development of the Glossier brand and the vision of its elusive founder Emily Weiss. Perhaps a little like expose than the blurb makes it seem, I still found this an interesting story about brand development and women in leadership.

I‘m not a makeup expert and I don‘t follow the popular brands, but I‘m always here for a behind the scenes look at companies and their ceos, especially if it‘s scandalous. 😆 I‘m sorry to report that there‘s really not a scandal here. The author just seems to be mystified and fascinated by Emily Weiss, founder of Glossier, which absolutely blew up! It‘s a light pick for me, since there‘s no tell-all though I was led to believe there would be??

Megabooks I didn‘t understand what kind of book she was trying to write…business, bio, tell-all…🤔🤔🤷🏻‍♀️ 13mo
Chelsea.Poole @Megabooks same! It was interesting, as a quick listen but I wouldn‘t heartily recommend it to everyone. I read your review of it and agree 😊 13mo

I‘ve never used Glossier products, but I‘m usually up for a good business bio. This one was frustrating for me (and probably the writer, too) because for as many times as Meltzer talked to Weiss, she never got to the heart of who Weiss was, but Meltzer also didn‘t report enough on just the business to make this a bio of Glossier the business. Idk. It was interesting but lacked focus. A quick read if you‘re a Glossier/Weiss fan, though.

Cinfhen Not familiar with brand or influencer- pass 😘 1y
