A Man Called Ove: A Novel | Fredrik Backman

⭐️⭐️⭐️• I have mixed feelings about this book. I‘m not sure that bad life experiences give someone an excuse to be as stubborn and rude as Ove is. But my biggest issue is the problematic portrayal of suicide. Treating suicide in such a lighthearted manner isn‘t appropriate. But, I didn‘t hate it — it‘s a fast and easy read. And pretty heartwarming. I cried at the end. Ugh, mixed feelings.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ • I‘m ashamed that I like these books because they are about a stalker/murderer who is terrible to women and aren‘t well-written, but I can‘t help myself. This one is a fast read and the end is bonkers. (Season 2 of You on Netflix is completely different from this book which was a disappointment.)

⭐️½ • My review is not about the book topic. The 1980s AIDS crisis was horrifically sad & a huge failure of our government that needs to be talked about more. But, this was a very slow read for me due to poor pacing & extreme amount of rambling. The author outright connects things that should be left up to the reader to connect. The only remotely developed character is Yale. I didn‘t at all enjoy reading this book and do not recommend.

⭐️⭐️ ½ • I thought I would love this but found it hard to read/listen to because honestly it‘s probably too smart for me. (I switched to audiobook 1/4 of the way in.) Not much new here about feminism, millennials, modern capitalism, corporate greed, etc., but liked the author‘s personal stories. I also thought the UVA rape case essay was good and I appreciated her thoughts on weddings and marriage.

The Stranger | Harlan Coben

⭐️⭐️⭐️ • Coben writes page-turners that have proven to be a great way to add mostly-brainless variety to my reading list. But this one isn‘t my favorite. It has a lot of characters to keep track of and I read it too slow to keep everything straight.

⭐️⭐️½ • I had a hard time caring about most of the characters which meant I had a hard time getting through this book. I felt that the character development was really uneven. Overall there was an unrealistic amount of lying happening about silly things for how serious of a situation it was. But it perked up a bit at the end. I read an advance reader copy titled Miracle Submarine. Maybe other significant changes were made before final publication?

MelissaSue81 I really didn't like this one either.. For many of the same reasons. I also found the ending to be really unsatisfying.. like of all the people that it COULD have been, I felt it was the worst possible option.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ • This is one action-packed book that moves seriously FAST — let your mind drift for one minute and you‘ll miss something important. It‘s got both Harry Potter and The Hunger Game vibes. Many descriptions (world building, descriptions of the magic structure, etc.) are lacking, which is a pretty major flaw and can make it hard to visualize. That being said, I can‘t wait for the sequel and it‘s going to make a fantastic movie.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½ • Gritty with Breaking Bad vibes, this book was REAL GOOD. (Not for the faint of heart — lots of violence, but it plays an important role.)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ • This book is just the kind I love: a solid plot and even better character development. A commentary on the obscene injustices of our so-called justice system woven together with the complications that incarceration creates in relationships, this book grabbed me from page one and didn‘t let go.

⭐️⭐️⭐️½ • This one left me wanting more, but maybe that was the point? Not exactly satisfying, but I‘m glad I read it. It‘s been compared to Gone Girl, which I think is a stretch, but I think it could be made into an interesting movie.

Becoming | Michelle Obama

⭐️⭐️⭐️ • I ❤️ Michelle & everything she stands for. But I had a hard time getting into this book so I listened to the audiobook. I personally don‘t quite understand the extreme hype around this autobiography. (That being said, I can‘t remember the last autobiography I read & maybe I just don‘t like them in general.) It felt safe & is too long. There definitely were nuggets that I found to be interesting & I only feel love for the Obama family.

⭐️⭐️⭐️½: I really enjoyed this book. It explores the complications and joys of having a transgender young child well, I think. It was maybe a bit too wholesome for me and some of the word choice made me a little eye roll-y. But, over all a good read.

⭐️⭐️⭐️½ • I started out loving this book but found my mind wandering as I kept reading, especially toward the end. The dual timeline thing is super interesting, but the stories are almost too similar. Because of this, the story was somewhat predictable. Also I think it could have been at least 50 pages shorter. But I‘m glad I read it and will read the sequel.

I knew what the end scene was going to be, but it was still so shocking and heartbreaking to read. What a powerful little book. My only criticism is that the boy read much younger than nine, which I found to be a bit distracting.

Educated: A Memoir | Tara Westover
post image
Panpan

While it has its moments, this book is not well-written. None of the many characters (real people!) are even close to fully developed and almost all of it reads as unrealistic. (I have lots of questions about how Tara got into BYU and managed to stay.) Plus, Tara writes herself as very selfish. It‘s been compared to The Glass Castle, which is insane. That book is in a completely different league. (But the cover art is great so yay marketing.)
