The Gabriel Hounds
The Gabriel Hounds | Mary Stewart
It's all a grand adventure when Christy Mansel unexpectedly runs into her cousin Charles in Damascus. And being young, rich, impetuous, and used to doing whatever they please, they decide to barge in uninvited on their eccentric Great-Aunt Harrietdespite a long-standing family rule strictly forbidding unannounced visits. A strange new world awaits Charles and Christy beyond the gates of Dar Ibrahim"Lady Harriet's" ancient, crumbling palace in High Lebanonwhere a physician is always in residence and a handful of Arab servants attends to the odd old woman's every need. But there is a very goodvery sinisterreason why guests are not welcome at Dar Ibrahim. And the young cousins are about to discover that, as difficult as it is to break into the dark, imposing edifice, it may prove even harder still to escape . . .

It was nice revisiting this. Mary Stewart's biggest strength is that she can invoke such a sense of place -- I don't actually have any visual imagination at all, but I can somehow still almost see the places she describes.

The romance is a bit perfunctory in this one -- sort of inevitable, rather than developed at all.

I read on the treadmill but today it was sooo hard to pick what I was going to read, argh. I have trouble sometimes about wanting to finish books (instead of focusing on the process of reading). I ended up going back to... not exactly a favourite, but one I enjoy revisiting. Reading Mary Stewart's romances made me admit I like reading romance!

Lindy When it comes to reading, there‘s no such thing as a guilty pleasure. Read what you like! 🌼 3y
shanaqui @Lindy I quite agree! I gave up on calling anything a guilty pleasure a few years ago, and reading's more fun for it. 3y

This was my first Mary Stewart. I found it ok and agree with fans of Mary Stewart's work. This is not one of her bests. But I liked the setting and the writing was good. Definitely will be reading more of her works. 3 out of 5.

I‘m on a nostalgic reread run these last few days... I‘ve read 17 books already in March. 😂😂 Surgery perks. 😝 #howjessreadsin2019

I love finding things in used books. This letter, postmarked 1987, was in the book I bought at the library book sale yesterday. Judging by the handwriting I‘d say the girls were around 9 or 10 years old. Lauren Talan wrote from NJ to Sarah Buchanan in NC. If either of you is a Litten, I‘ve got your letter. 😀

A splendid mystery, set in Lebanon full of twists and turns. An engrossing, wonderfully written thrilling tale. Occasionally quite scary 😱
