A woman learns to follow her own road in this heartwarming novel inspired by The Wizard of Oz by New York Times bestselling author Virginia Kantra. Dorothy Dee Gale is searching for a place to belong. After their globe-trotting mothers death, Dee and her sister Toni settled with Uncle Henry and Aunt Em in Kansas, where Dee attends graduate school. But when Dees relationship with a faculty member, a bestselling novelist, ends in heartbreak and humiliation, shes caught in a tornado of negative publicity. Unable to face her colleaguesor her former loverDee applies to the writing program at Trinity College Dublin. Dees journey to Ireland leads her to new companions: seemingly brainless Sam Clerywho dropped out of college and now runs a newsagents shopis charming and hot, in a dissolute, Irish poet kind of way; allegedly heartless Tim Woodmanwho stiffly refused to take back his ex-fianceseems stuck in his past; and fiercely loyal Reeti Kaur, who longs for the courage to tell her parents she wants to teach underprivileged girls rather than work in the family business. In a year of opportunities and changes, love and loss, Dee is mentored by powerful women in the writing program, challenging her to see herself and her work with new eyes. With her friends, Dee finds the confidence to confront her biggest fearsincluding her intimidating graduate advisor, who may not be so wicked after all. Faced with a choice with far-reaching consequences, Dee must apply the lessons shes learned along the way about making a family, finding a home...and recognizing the power thats been inside her all along.

Kantra is SO GOOD at modern #retellings! I loved all the nods to the original Wizard of Oz - they were made with love, even when they were jokes, and the ways the story was updated made sense. Dee has my heart and I'm so glad she learned to reach for what SHE wants. #womensfiction

Mehso-so

This was okay. I didn‘t like the mc, Dorothy, very much — she was too melodramatic, whiny, and needy. I also didn‘t buy the love triangle. Dee‘s (she was called by a variety of names) growth wasn‘t particularly realistic either; we don‘t really see the progression— we‘re just supposed to accept that it happened. I liked the ending, but I was expecting it. #audiowalk

This is an updating of The Wizard of Oz set in the present with no magic. Ireland replaces Oz. The scarecrow, the tin man, the lion, and the witches are all people, as is Toto — she‘s Dorothy‘s sister. Sometimes the parallels are so obvious it‘s ridiculous— Tim Woodman. 🙄 Dorothy is 26 and whiny and needy — not in a way that makes you empathize with her either; she‘s just pathetic. I hope this gets better. #audiowalk

This was a sweet story about an author looking to find her voice in writing. The love triangle wasn‘t fun, but I like how it was fleshed out who Dee ends with. I adore these such lovable characters, all showing their Scarecrow, TinMan and Lion(ess) characteristics. Adored the Tinman and Lion(ess) most. They were very well versed out. Was nice to see Dee grow, especially finally standing up to that awful ex.

It was so much fun matching the characters from the original “Oz” story to the characters in this retelling.

Inspired by “The Wizard of Oz”, this story follows Dorothy “Dee” Gale, a graduate student who is searching for a place to belong after her mother‘s death. ⬇️

rubyslippersreads I‘m looking forward to this, but with some trepidation, since I ❤️ the original so much. 4mo
suvata @rubyslippersreads It‘s a totally different kind of book so I don‘t think it would ruin the original for you. This one is more of a contemporary romance. The similarities lie in the personalities of the characters. I thought it was fun. 4mo
tpixie Stacked- after all, I‘m from Kansas! @rubyslippersreads your ‘name‘ says it all! Oz! 4mo

This is a reminiscence of a movie I grew up in enjoying because of how much my mother likes it. Looking at it, I am intrigued, but not heads over heels -yet.
Dorothy is looking for a place to belong. This Dorothy is an aspiring writer. After some negative publicity, she takes a trip to Ireland, which leads her to three odd companions. One of which is described as hot (not sure I like that). What I like is their fluidity; same yet different.
