From acclaimed author Makiia Lucier, a dazzling, romantic fantasy inspired by Pacific Island mythology. In the old tales, it is written that the egg of a seadragon, dragonfruit, holds within it the power to undo a persons greatest sorrow. But as with all things that offer hope when hope had gone, the tale came with a warning. Every wish demands a price. Hanalei of Tamarind is the cherished daughter of an old island family. But when her father steals a seadragon egg meant for an ailing princess, she is forced into a life of exile. In the years that follow, Hanalei finds solace in studying the majestic seadragons that roam the Nominomi Sea. Until, one day, an encounter with a female dragon offers her what she desires most. A chance to return home, and to right a terrible wrong. Samahtitamahenele, Sam, is the last remaining prince of Tamarind. But he can never inherit the throne, for Tamarind is a matriarchal society. With his mother ill and his grandmother nearing the end of her reign. Sam is left with two choices: to marry, or to find a cure for the sickness that has plagued his mother for ten long years. When a childhood companion returns from exile, she brings with her something he has not felt in a very long time-hope. But Hanalei and Sam are not the only ones searching for the dragonfruit. And as they battle enemies both near and far, there is another danger they cannot escapethat of the dragonfruit itself.

I had so much fun reading my April #BookOfTheMonth pick! I wish I‘d read it in the warmer parts of the year, but reading by tree light does add a certain magic! This adventure fantasy— complete with seadragons, neat marking magic where tattoos come to life, a quest & romance— makes for a fast-paced & exciting read! Hanalei hasn‘t returned to her home since her father‘s betrayal, but when forced her return, it‘s a different welcome than envisioned!

Hana spent most of her life exiled from her home island, but when chance and three dragons bring her back, she makes it her mission to right the wrong that lead to her exile.
Sam is grandson to the Queen and has spent his life hunting for a dragon egg, the one thing that can save his mother‘s life. When Hana, his childhood best friend offers her help, he accepts without question, ignoring his suspicions.
Amazing book, I loved it beginning to end.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

It was fun to be whisked away on an adventure in the Pacific Islands, complete with pirates, sentient tattoos, and sea dragons! I wanted more from this, but I can appreciate it for what it is. 🎧

In my mind this story was an animated film with all the makings of a new fatherless Disney princess (with tats!) and a righteous mom-loving right-hand man in a matriarchal society. I‘m thinking Olivia Rodrigo for the Oscar-nominated song!
