Sargent's Women: Four Lives Behind the Canvas | Donna M. Lucey
6 posts | 1 reading | 1 to read
A New York Times Book Review Editors Choice Selection [Lucey] delivers the goods, disclosing the unhappy or colorful lives that Sargent sometimes hinted at but didnt spell out.Boston Globe In this seductive, multilayered biography, based on original letters and diaries, Donna M. Lucey illuminates four extraordinary women painted by the iconic high-society portraitist John Singer Sargent. With uncanny intuition, Sargent hinted at the mysteries and passions that unfolded in his subjects lives. These women inhabited a rarefied world of wealth and strict conventionsyet all of them did something unexpected, something shocking, to upend societys rules.

Slept in late, was tired after yesterday‘s hike & a trip to Wegmans- opening day in Norwalk, CT but about an hour + ride so it became a day trip. of course we came home with many delights!
Having coffee on the porch before it hits the 90s in late afternoon. A soft breeze, how refreshing! - hoping to see my hummingbird friend- usually it‘s early morning when I spot him. #coffeeandbooks #porchlife

Yay for feisty women who ignore society‘s rules/expectations. Feeling excited about these women. Granted, their wealth in some ways protected them- they did not have to live to survive as other women did then.

Just got home from a visit to NYC via train with my son to see John Singer Sargent‘s exhibit at the MET. An added bonus was a separate exhibit featuring his younger sister Emily‘s paintings. #makingmemories
