From an unforgettable new voice in Irish fiction, a heart-pounding, life-affirming story about one woman trying to leave her marriage and start over. For fans of Claire Keegan and Emma Donoghue. On a bright spring afternoon in Dublin, Ciara Fay makes a split-second decision that will change her life. Grabbing an armful of clothes from the washing line, Ciara straps her two young daughters into her car and drives away. Head spinning, all she knows for certain is that home is no longer safe. It was meant to be an escape. But with dwindling savings, no job, and her family across the sea, Ciara finds herself adrift, facing a broken housing system and the voice of her own demons. As summer passes and winter closes in, she must navigate raising her children in a hotel room, searching for a new home and dealing with her husband Ryan's relentless campaign to get her to come back. Because leaving is one thing, but staying away is another. Tense, beautiful and gut-wrenching, Nesting is an unforgettable story of motherhood, underpinned by love, hope and resilience.

Mehso-so

Something I never say- I wish this had been a novella. I think it would have had a greater impact on me. In the beginning I felt as if I was suffocating on my anxiety for Ciara but then it carried on and on and felt more and more typical. I feel terrible saying it because it is an important topic but I felt like I have read many versions of this tale before and this didn‘t add anything new.

BarbaraBB Well put. I felt exactly the same! 6h

A book about abuse, both emotional & sexual, that reads as a thriller

Ciara packs up her & her children‘s stuff & leave her abusive husband with nowhere to go. From then on, I just expected her husband to show up

The book looks at the hopeless housing situation in Dublin & how little society is prepared to help women leaving their abusers

I had to stop reading at times because it got too intense & to think that this is the life of so many women

#wpf25 Book 13

This was one of those books that leaves you breathless - that you don‘t want to look away from, but you really want to run away from. I never look at the end of a book, but had to in this case, just to know.

It was rather similar to Manguso‘s Liars, both in subject matter and the way it made me feel, and there was a bit more heart in this one.

For me, certainly in the top half of the (slightly disappointing) longlist.

BarbaraBB You liked it much more than I did! Glad you did. I‘d prefer Liars to this one. (edited) 2w

sarahbarnes Just got this from the library. Great review. I‘m curious what I‘ll think of it. 2w
Caroline2 I‘ve just got this in from BorrowBox. Bit nervous as I‘m just done with tragedy porn and Evil men doing Evil deeds! 😒 (I‘ve just finished listening to John Boyne‘s Water….Brilliant but hard going) 2w
squirrelbrain Yeah, it is definitely of the ‘Evil Men‘ genre but give it a go -you‘ll soon know! 2w
Caroline2 I‘ve returned it to the library. 😂 I‘m bailing before I‘ve even started!! I need a break from bleak books for a while. 👠2w

I just saw in the blurb this is favorably compared to Keegan & Donoghue? That‘s marketing for you. 😑

The writing is accessible & the characters are believable to the point you want to shake the MC. However the kids were an annoying distraction in audio version. Toddler voices, unless they are real, aren‘t cute.

It‘s not a deep read and doesn‘t have penetrating or lyrical prose. Satisfactory for entertainment purposes. I‘d give it 3âï¸

charl08 Ouch. I guess you're not lobbying for this one to be shortlisted then? 2w
Tamra @charl08 This year I‘ve been distracted so I don‘t recall what‘s on the fiction long list. 😠2w
BarbaraBB Our reviews are pretty similar. I am glad too it‘s not just me! And indeed those children‘s voices 😱 2w

squirrelbrain Eek, I‘m glad I‘m reading this in print and not listening to- I don‘t think I could bear it! 😬 2w
Tamra @squirrelbrain good choice! 😉 2w
Cathythoughts Great review, that I will take on board ðŸ‘🻠2w
Tamra @Cathythoughts it‘s not “novelâ€, but it passes the time. It‘s repetitive like others have noted, but I‘m sure that is intentional. 2w

Mehso-so

Ciara tried to escape from her emotional abusive husband, with her small kids in tow. That‘s about it. Unpopular opinion but I found it a bit repetitive. I never really felt drawn into the story but that may be caused by the audiobook, in which the children‘s voices were extremely annoying (and not just when the kids were annoying themselves!). Definitely not my favorite on the #WP25.

ChaoticMissAdventures I thought it showed the repetitiveness of what it is like trying to get out of these relationships. Which I appreciate, but can see how it can get tiresome. In general I am annoyed by children's voices and POV so 🤣 maybe the audio isn't the best way to go. 3w
squirrelbrain Glad I‘m not doing audio on this one then! 3w
Hooked_on_books I‘m so glad I didn‘t get the audio for this, I could not deal with annoying children‘s voices! I‘m less enthusiastic about the fiction list than the NF based on what I‘ve read this year, but still intend to give them all a try. 3w

BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books I didn‘t really like this one nor The Dream Hotel but I expect to discover some books that make it worth reading the longlist. Next will be 3w
sarahbarnes I just picked this one up. I will temper my expectations after your review. 3w
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes Many loved it. I seem to turn into a cynical and critical person â˜ºï¸ 3w
Tamra Agreed! Glad I‘m not the only one. I also had the thought it was just me, but now I don‘t think so. It just didn‘t seem to offer anything new on the theme. 2w

Dizzyingly claustrophobic story of a young mother trying to leave an emotionally abusive partner. (Pictured: the ice cream shop in Skerries the MCs visit in the opening scene)

Book 8 #WP25
Phew that was good. Love a book where I can catch myself shouting at the characters.
This is a tense book. Ciara (pronounced K-ear-a which, glad I listened to this I wouldn't have in my brain) has left her abusive husband but it is a struggle, so many people probably do not see him as abusive but her fear is palpable on the page.
Great writing, and really eye opening about the housing crisis in Ireland
4.25/5

LeeRHarry I was definitely shouting at the characters many a time. 1mo

I went in having seen great reviews but was initially a bit disappointed. It is no doubt an important subject (emotional abuse, family homelessness) yet as a novel at first it didn‘t feel like a fresh take sufficient to be nominated for a literary prize. However this poor judgement is all mine as by halfway through I was completely hooked, unable to look away. It is so tense and claustrophobic, so simply told yet heartbreaking.

WOW, WOW, WOW!

This could very well be my favorite book of the year. I felt everything Ciara felt as she leaves her emotionally abusive husband, all the second guessing, anxiety and struggle to find her way. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This why I love the Women‘s Prize. Can I just award it the prize now? It‘s that good. Read it!

Lesliereadsalot You sold me! 1mo
